The first watch ever worn on the moon, it has become an enduring symbol of the ingenuity and skill that took us into space. On the sixtieth anniversary of the Speedmaster’s release, we look back with space-enthusiast and brand ambassador, George Clooney, at the heady days of the Apollo program and reflect on why the Speedmaster was able to go where it did. While he’s played an astronaut more than once, few people know about George Clooney’s love affair with space exploration. Clooney grew up in the sixties and was eight years old when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin first set foot on the moon. Like most children of his generation, astronauts were his heroes and going into space was his dream. Thinking back to that moment in his life, Clooney says, “It was the most exciting time to be a kid. We knew all the astronaut’s names. We even ate the food that the astronauts ate… During one of our vacations, we drove through Neil Armstrong’s hometown, simply because we wanted to drive through his hometown. The astronauts were that big a deal to us.” In 1961, U.S. President John F. Kennedy set a bold challenge for the American people. He stated, “I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before the decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth.” “In just 60 years, we’d gone from inventing cars to [talking about] landing a man on the moon,” says Clooney, “It felt like the ultimate in optimism, the ultimate in forward thinking. It made us feel like anything could be done.” When Apollo 11 touched down on the moon on July 20th, 1969, and Kennedy’s challenge was answered, the young Clooney watched from his suburban backyard. Standing with his father, looking up at the moon, he felt a special connection with his heroes as they took their first steps into a new world. Like the astronauts they were straining to see, Clooney’s father also wore an Omega. While it is impossible to know which frontier we will cross next, we can be sure, as is Clooney, that we will continue reaching for the stars. And if there is one thing that we can take from the 60th anniversary of the Omega Speedmaster, it is that with the right tools, achieving any challenge is possible. Omega is proud to have played a role in one of the greatest achievements of the 20th century – the moon landing – and looks forward to the many great accomplishments humans will make in the next 60 years and beyond. It is instantly recognisable and universally admired. Watch buyers are drawn to it. Collectors are driven and inspired by it. But what has made the OMEGA Speedmaster perhaps the most famous and desirable chronograph in the world? Even if you ignore its historical importance, the watch is still anchored by a timeless design that has endured for 60 years. Evolution may have produced different variations, but these are just some of the “classic” Speedmaster features that have helped create an icon. Twisted Lugs & Tachymeter Scale Since 1964, the “twisted lugs” of the Speedmaster have given the watch a truly distinctive look. Their addition enabled the creation of an asymmetric case that provides extra strength and protects the crown and pushers. The Speedmaster was the first watch in the world to take the tachymeter scale off the dial and place it on the bezel. The change was initiated with racing car drivers in mind and this is where the “Speedmaster” name originates. Pure Dial & Box-shaped Glass Loved by watch fans for its understated simplicity, the classic triple-register Speedmaster design delivers superb readability thanks to its black dial with luminous markers and contrasting hands. The glass that protects the dial is cleverly domed to give the impression of an overall thinner watch. Over the years, both hesalite and sapphire-crystal glass has been used. Hands Aside from the Broad Arrow and Alpha hands associated with early models, it is the Baton style hands that have been most used. Slim and elegantly flat, they further add to the uncomplicated design. For more information on the regular Omega Speedmaster, please click here . I'm expecting to have the watch in June. But another opportunity presented itself and am thinking about letting the Speedmaster go. I know the thought of letting a watch go without even trying it on might sound crazy but I've had a love and hate relationship with the brand. Started out with a PO8500. Being a SCUBA diver, I was thrilled to get the watch wet. Unfortunately, the watch performed horribly after the dive. If you are wondering, I had the helium escape valve screwed down. The underperformance of the watch, made me jump ship to other brands and the this year for the first time I was excited to see the 60th Anniversary releases. Unfortunately, this also happens to be a very strong year for both Panerai and Rolex. Given the options, I'd like to get into another watch I've been eyeballing for a long time. Long story short, if you are interested, please let me know. I'm not trying to make profit just break even. I'll ship the watch to you when I get it and cover shipping. Thanks. I highly doubt having the HE valve screwed in caused any damage while diving. Options Copy link to this post paneristi000 May 4, 2017 Posts 9 Likes 5 Often times divers forget to screw-in the helium escape in between dives. Having the screw open could lead to issues. That was not the case as I was cautious to screw in the helium valve before my dives. I wasn't implying that was the issue. I live in the Midwest and went down to Roatan for a 7-day diving trip and ended up doing 10 dives. Not sure if it matters but I went from being in freezing temperatures to 80+ degree weather. When I came back, I noticed moisture developing in the case and on the crystal. Additionally, the hour hand was not aligned properly. It became hard to tell the difference between 230 and 330. The only way I could get the moisture to go away was by opening the helium valve for a prolong period of time. This somewhat annoyed me as I was extremely looking forward to enjoying the watch. Individual circumstances vary. Perhaps I was the one and only unfortunate owner of the PO. Nonetheless it just left a bad taste in my mouth. The hand alignment drifting is a well known problem for the 8500's, 8605's, and 9300's, and a problem Omega would fix under warranty as they have done on many others. You are also surely not the first one to have an issue with leaks in a newer PO - there have been several instances I've seen reported, so I do believe that Omega was having some quality issues on these at one time (there are other issues as well, but the 2 you mention are certainly not unheard of). I was quoted a six weeks turnaround time by an AD and didn't want to feel like I was walking around naked. It's good to know that my issues weren't uncommon. Hopefully they've been addressed. Thanks again for the insights. Great forum. I had this problem with a new PO 8500 too, and I am not even a diver. This additional hole is a bad thing. My AT without it and works flawlessly. My opinion: if you want to really dive with a watch, get Rolex (friends say so) or Seiko. Grand Seiko is my personal experience. I've summarized my experience from a couple of years. Since then got out of the PO and bought a few other professional divers watches. Rolex Sea Dweller 16600, EnneBi Fondale Bronzo 9683, and a couple of others in the making. The EnneBi bronzo is rated for 1000 meters. I had the opportunity to test it out and it was fantastic. Not to mention the patina I developed from salt water exposure (if you are into that kind of stuff). I also had no issues with my trusty PAM372. From personal experience, I've been extremely satisfied with the Sea Dweller. Smaller case but it lets its presence known. Take care. Today, we had our meeting with Omega and had a closer look at their new collections. We received many questions and comments about the Speedmaster. Let’s try to answer a couple. Speedmaster 60 th Anniversary Reference 311.10.39.30.01.001 I can be super short about the new Omega Speedmaster 60th anniversary limited edition. I ordered one. So did two other guys of the Fratello Watches team. We were simply blown away by it. Based on the comments and likes we received on Instagram and Facebook and the numerous e-mails and whatsapp messages we received, you like it as well but have some questions. How many? First, there is the difference between the Speedmaster 60th Anniversary watch from the trilogy set and the separate (limited edition) version. The trilogy set is limited to 557 pieces, however, Omega also will produce 3557 extra pieces (so 557 + 3557. Not 557 + 3000 pieces) for each watch separately. We received some questions if Omega can remove the number from the dial on the trilogy set of 557 pieces. Well, no. You have to make a choice I guess. Also, you can try to buy the separate versions (Railmaster, Seamaster 300, Speedmaster) with corresponding numbers but Omega is not facilitating this so you need to be really lucky with that. How is the new bracelet? The new Speedmaster 60th Anniversary models come with a new bracelet that has been inspired by the 7077 bracelet. That bracelet was used in 1957 on the Railmaster CK2914, Seamaster 300 CK2913 and Speedmaster CK2915. All three models of the 60th anniversary use the same new bracelet as well. It is quite a bit thicker than the original 7077, has no flexible links and have a modern clasp. Despite being thicker and heavier, it wears very comfortable and the looks are awesome. Are the links polished? Although I think it is clearly visible on all images out there, we still get this question from time to time. The center link is brushed and the outer links are polished, like the original. Will it fit my Speedmaster Pro? There were quite some comments and questions about this bracelet and whether it would fit the ‘regular’ Moonwatch models. It doesn’t, as it is for 19mm lugs and the normal Speedmaster Professional has 20mm lugs. We received no information on a possible 20mm upgrade for the normal Moonwatch for this type of bracelet though. Perhaps ‘we’ enthusiasts have to do some more requests for one Omega Speedmaster Copiar omega relógios Kopie Omega Uhren montres omega vintage omega speedmaster leather strap ebay женщины омега часы omega speedmaster professional moonwatch moncler díolo
