Step into a world where Swedish meatballs meet pop music, where streamlined design and functional minimalism redefined modern living, and where Nordic ingenuity brought about life-saving innovations.

From Taste to Tech explores the ways in which Nordic craftspeople, artists, chefs, and thinkers brought their values and visions to American soil: building churches, skyscrapers, and bridges in the 1930s, revolutionizing childhood with playful yet purposeful Lego toys, and transforming entertainment through cinematic storytelling and best-selling games like Minecraft, Angry Birds, and Candy Crush. From quintessentially Swedish brands you never knew had Nordic origins - like the implantable pacemaker or pizza rolls - there’s something for everyone in From Taste to Tech!

The exhibition features a remarkable collection of artifacts from World War II, original art for the film Pinocchio by Gustaf Tenggren, sandals worn by Greta Garbo, vintage SAAB parts and mid-century modern furniture.

From Taste to Tech: 100 Years of Nordic Innovation & Impact will be on view at ASHM from April 26, 2026 to February 7, 2027. Admission is included with ASHM general tickets.

The Swedish fretted dulcimer has a storied history in Scandinavian music and instruments but is rooted in Swedish folk music. Tuning is the first lesson, 11:30 AM - 1 PM, in the beginners’ dulcimer playing workshop. Once in tune (D-A-D) it can’t be played wrong! Strumming a simple tune is next and in about 10 minutes the music begins. Instructions with printed charts and playing in the morning session will be followed by a 2nd afternoon session, 3 PM - 4:30 PM, highlighting rhythm, fiddle tunes, and improvising. Bring your own fretted dulcimer to play tuned D-A-D. A few dulcimers will be available for newcomers. Call (212) 779-3587 for reservations. Jóhannesson.

In early 2016, Eliza Reid’s biggest daily goals were modest but meaningful: showering without one of her four kids bursting into the bathroom, juggling clients without dropping a deadline, and growing the writers’ retreat she was building from scratch. What wasn’t on her bingo card? That her husband—a bookish, cardigan-wearing history professor—would run for president of Iceland … and, seven weeks later, actually win.

Suddenly, Canadian-born Eliza was catapulted into a new life as first lady of her adopted country with the eyes of a nation watching her every move—as someone’s wife. Absent an instruction manual (she googled how to curtsy before meeting the Queen of Denmark), she decided to do what she’d always done: figure it out on her own terms. Part fish out of water story and part fairy tale, The First Lady Next Door takes readers from rural Ontario to Timbuktu, and from the White House to Buckingham Palace. Eliza shows how embracing authenticity in all its messiness can becomeyour greatest strength, even when the world expects polished perfection. After all, our everyday moments are what create the road map for making the unexpected count.

Start date: 05 May 2026 07:00 PM
End date: 05 May 2026 08:30 PM
Category: Education
Organizer: Scandinavia House
Name: Scandinavia House
Email: info@amscan.org
Phone: 2127793587
Url: https://www.scandinaviahouse.org/event/the-first-lady-next-door-with-eliza-reid/
Street / Address: 58 Park Avenue
City: New York
State: NY
Country: US
Gallery Tours | Inside Voices, Outside Light

<field.start_date>06 May 2026 05:30 PM</field.start_date><field.end_date>06 May 2026 06:00 PM</field.end_date><field.category>Exhibit</field.category><field.organizer>Scandinavia House</field.organizer><field.name>Scandinavia House</field.name><field.email>info@amscan.org</field.email><field.phone>2127793587</field.phone><field.url>https://www.scandinaviahouse.org/event/gallery-tours-inside-voices-outside-light/2026-05-06/</field.url><field.street>58 Park Avenue</field.street><field.city>New York</field.city><field.state>NY</field.state><field.country>US</field.country>
On view from April 18 to June 20, 2026 at Scandinavia House, Inside Voices, Outside Light is a group exhibition featuring 21 contemporary artists from the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, and Norway. First screened at Scandinavia House in 2018, this gripping sociological suspense story by director Ruben Östlund dives into the ethics of moral responsibility, privilege, and media sensationalism.

Christian is the respected curator of a contemporary art museum, a divorced but devoted father of two, who drives an electric car and supports good causes. His next exhibition, “The Square,” is an installation that invites passersby to altruistic deeds, reminding them of their role as responsible human beings. But sometimes it’s difficult to live up to your own ideas: When Christian’s phone is stolen, his foolish response drags him into a shameful situation. And when the museum’s PR agency creates an unexpected campaign for “The Square,” the overblown reaction from the public sends Christian, as well as the museum, into an existential crisis.

The Square was shortlisted for the 2017 Oscars as the Best Foreign Language Film nominee. It has received numerous distinctions since its premiere, including six awards at the European Film Awards, including Best European Film; and the Palme D’Or Winner at the Cannes Film Festival, 2017.

“Ruben Östlund’s sprawling and daringly surreal satire The Square turns a contemporary art museum into a city-state of bizarre, dysfunctional and Ballardian strangeness… It sets out to make your jaw drop. And it succeeds.” —Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

“[Östlund] creates suspense in a new-fangled way, turning the space between people into an alarming existential battleground.” —Owen Gleiberman, Variety

Start date: 06 May 2026 07:00 PM
End date: 06 May 2026 09:00 PM
Category: Entertainment
Organizer: Scandinavia House
Name: Scandinavia House
Email: info@amscan.org
Phone: 2127793587
Url: https://www.scandinaviahouse.org/event/the-square-silver-anniversary-rescreens/
Street / Address: 58 Park Avenue
City: New York
State: NY
Country: US
Butterfly Celebration

<field.start_date>09 May 2026 12:00 PM</field.start_date><field.end_date>09 May 2026 06:00 PM</field.end_date><field.category>Celebration</field.category><field.organizer>Gudrun Sjödén</field.organizer><field.name>Lorrie Daugherty</field.name><field.email>greenestreet@gudrunsjoden.com</field.email><field.phone>212-219-2510</field.phone><field.url>https://www.gudrunsjoden.com/en-us/stores/store-new-york</field.url><field.street>50A Greene St.</field.street><field.city>New York City</field.city><field.state>NY</field.state><field.country>US</field.country>
Join us for our Butterfly Celebration, featuring a special talk (2-4 p.m.) with Holly Tooker, butterfly expert from the American Museum of Natural History!

Open to all levels, including new students, the series focuses on exploration, play, and the process of making rather than finished outcomes.

Participants will experiment with a range of techniques across sessions, including acrylic and watercolor painting, pastel work, ink practices, drawing with graphite and charcoal, and creating sculptural forms from paper, while also engaging with relevant art history and contemporary art.

Each class invites a meditative and attentive approach, encouraging students to discover inspiration from both inner and outer worlds. Sessions conclude with supportive group reflections that honor each participant’s process and discoveries. As part of the experience, students will also explore the 3rd floor gallery exhibition “Inside Voices, Outside Light: Perspectives on West Nordic Art.”

The long-term benefits of knitting are widely recognized. Once you know the basics, knitting can create what’s called a “flow state,” similar to meditation. Knitting uses both sides of the brain, making it a healthy way to focus while also stretching your brain muscles. And there are only two stitches in knitting — by combining those, you can create hundreds of designs and patterns!

In this class designed for those who have never knit before, or beginners who would like to practice their stitches, you’ll learn to cast on, knit and purl. After learning these skills, you’ll be able to practice independently to make any projects you wish. Participants should bring size 9 US straight needles and some worsted weight yarn — we’ll provide a safe and friendly atmosphere to learn a new life-long skill!

Start date: 12 May 2026 05:00 PM
End date: 12 May 2026 07:00 PM
Category: Education
Organizer: Scandinavia House
Name: Scandinavia House
Email: info@amscan.org
Phone: 2127793587
Url: https://www.scandinaviahouse.org/event/beginners-knitting-with-hilary-snell/2026-05-12/
Street / Address: 58 Park Avenue
City: New York
State: NY
Country: US
Nordic Book Club Online | The School of Night

<field.start_date>12 May 2026 06:00 PM</field.start_date><field.end_date>12 May 2026 07:00 PM</field.end_date><field.category>Education</field.category><field.organizer>Scandinavia House</field.organizer><field.name>Scandinavia House</field.name><field.email>info@amscan.org</field.email><field.phone>2127793587</field.phone><field.url>https://www.scandinaviahouse.org/event/nordic-book-club-online-the-school-of-night/</field.url><field.street>58 Park Avenue</field.street><field.city>New York</field.city><field.state>NY</field.state><field.country>US</field.country>
Read and discuss literature with our Nordic Book Club Online!
Nordic Book Club meets monthly via Zoom to discuss contemporary literature in translation. On May 12, in coordination with our West Nordic art exhibition Inside Voices, Outside Light, we’ll be discussing:
The School of Night by Karl Ove Knausgård.

Kristian Hadeland, young and ambitious, has moved to London to study photography; he knows that he and his art are destined for more. His family never understood him, and his fellow photography students bore him. But when he meets Hans, an eccentric Dutch artist, the future he yearns for becomes possible—as long as he is willing to sacrifice everything and stop at nothing. Twenty-four years later, Kristian sees his dreams come to fruition when a major retrospective of his work is held in New York City. As his past catches up to him, Kristian’s world begins to crumble. Success comes at a price, but is he prepared to pay it?

In a thrilling twist on Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus, Karl Ove Knausgaard masterfully spins a cautionary tale about the lengths that we will go to achieve success—and how far we are willing to fall. His most daring and macabre novel yet, The School of Night is an indelible tale about dark temptations and moral depravity, and what we forget when we bargain with the devil.

The School of Night is available in paperback and e-book from Penguin Random House and from Bookshop.org and other retailers.

Start date: 12 May 2026 06:00 PM
End date: 12 May 2026 07:00 PM
Category: Education
Organizer: Scandinavia House
Name: Scandinavia House
Email: info@amscan.org
Phone: 2127793587
Url: https://www.scandinaviahouse.org/event/nordic-book-club-online-the-school-of-night/
Street / Address: 58 Park Avenue
City: New York
State: NY
Country: US
Movie screening: Love

<field.start_date>13 May 2026 07:00 PM</field.start_date><field.end_date>13 May 2026 09:00 PM</field.end_date><field.category>Entertainment</field.category><field.organizer>Scandinavia House</field.organizer><field.name>Scandinavia House</field.name><field.email>info@amscan.org</field.email><field.phone>2127793587</field.phone><field.url>https://www.scandinaviahouse.org/event/love/</field.url><field.street>58 Park Avenue</field.street><field.city>New York</field.city><field.state>NY</field.state><field.country>US</field.country>
“Utterly enrapturing”
See LOVE, Norwegian director Dag Johan Haugerud’s first installment of the widely acclaimed Oslo Trilogy!

An ambitious trilogy from Norwegian novelist/filmmaker Dag Johan Haugerud, LOVE–SEX–DREAMS are three distinct feature films linked by their themes of nontraditional intimacy, but need not be seen in any particular order. LOVE focuses on two colleagues at an Oslo hospital — Marianne, a straight (and straitlaced) doctor, and Tor, a gay male nurse. Both single, they cross paths by chance after hours and confide in each other: Marianne confesses her desire to be more adventurous and open in her encounters with men; Tor shares his fatigue with Grindr hook-ups. Their conversations form the heart of exploration of desire and emotional fulfillment.

“Dag Johan Haugerud’s gently humanistic drama is one of those films that feels akin to a prism, refracting its theme into the array of colors it contains…it’s so beautiful that you want to just keep dwelling in its world.” (Alissa Wilkinson, The New York Times)

Start date: 13 May 2026 07:00 PM
End date: 13 May 2026 09:00 PM
Category: Entertainment
Organizer: Scandinavia House
Name: Scandinavia House
Email: info@amscan.org
Phone: 2127793587
Url: https://www.scandinaviahouse.org/event/love/
Street / Address: 58 Park Avenue
City: New York
State: NY
Country: US
Swedish Days Festival

<field.start_date>14 May 2026 10:00 AM</field.start_date><field.end_date>16 May 2026 06:00 PM</field.end_date><field.category>Celebration</field.category><field.organizer>Downtown Kingsburg</field.organizer><field.phone>559.897.1111</field.phone><field.url>www.kingsburgdowntown.com</field.url><field.street>Draper Street</field.street><field.city>Kingsburg</field.city><field.state>CA</field.state><field.country>US</field.country>
Experience and taste the rich culture of Sweden during the 60th annual, 3-day festival that celebrates Kingsburg’s Swedish heritage. Resilience meets well-being

The four-part architecture series Nordic American Connections: Conversations on Architecture and Design engages contemporary Nordic and American architects and designers, highlighting their sustainable design approaches with an emphasis on award-winning projects that shape the American landscape.

The fourth panel of the series, marking Scandinavia House’s 25th Anniversary, will close the series with contemporary Nordic American architects focusing on the challenges they face as designers in a rapidly changing environment—AI and technology, economic volatility, climate vulnerability—and what’s next for future practice.

These design leaders will highlight their firms’ approaches to innovation, research and collaboration, and cross-cultural influences used in their work. They will share strategies embodied in Nordic design for resilience and wellbeing: use of mass timber and natural materials, alternative methods of construction, community building and ‘complete design’.

Participants include Daniel Baumann, Principal and Design Director at Henning Larsen; Bjarke Ingels, founder of BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group; and Ingalill Wahlroos-Ritter, Director of Architecture for Communities Los Angeles (ACLA). The program will be moderated by Susan Chin of DesignConnects.

The panel is organized by ASF with Susan Chin in collaboration with the American Institute of Architects New York, and American Institute of Architects Continental Europe.

Start date: 14 May 2026 06:30 PM
End date: 14 May 2026 07:30 PM
Category: Education
Organizer: Scandinavia House
Name: Scandinavia House
Email: info@amscan.org
Phone: 2127793587
Url: https://www.scandinaviahouse.org/event/next-in-nordic-american-architecture/
Street / Address: 58 Park Avenue
City: New York
State: NY
Country: US
Eurovision Watch Party

<field.start_date>16 May 2026 11:30 AM</field.start_date><field.end_date>16 May 2026 04:00 PM</field.end_date><field.category>Entertainment</field.category><field.organizer>SACC Arizona</field.organizer><field.url>https://www.saccarizona.org/event-6501155</field.url><field.street>Joy Lush Club, 24 W Camelback Rd.</field.street><field.city>Phoenix</field.city><field.state>AZ</field.state><field.country>US</field.country>
Eurovision Song Contest Watch Party

An ambitious trilogy from Norwegian novelist/filmmaker Dag Johan Haugerud, LOVE–SEX–DREAMS are three distinct feature films linked by their themes of nontraditional intimacy, but need not be seen in any particular order. In SEX, two male-identified colleagues who are happily married to women share candidly their secrets: one reveals his unprecedented recent sexual encounter with another man; the other is haunted by a recurring dream featuring David Bowie and his own gender fluidity. Both men — shockingly yet with great sensitivity — seek transparency and understanding with their wives. SEX thus envisions honest, warm-hearted possibilities for gender expansiveness within heterosexual monogamy, while also enacting the intricacy of an authentic and generous love.

“Superbly acted. The film is laced with dry humor but also poignancy and notes of melancholy. [Turns] the male character study on its head with a gentle subversiveness.” (David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter)

Start date: 20 May 2026 07:00 PM
End date: 20 May 2026 09:00 PM
Category: Entertainment
Organizer: Scandinavia House
Name: Scandinavia House
Email: info@amscan.org
Phone: 2127793587
Url: https://www.scandinaviahouse.org/event/sex/
Street / Address: 58 Park Avenue
City: New York
State: NY
Country: US
Nordic Innovation in Sustainability

<field.start_date>21 May 2026 05:00 PM</field.start_date><field.end_date>21 May 2026 08:00 PM</field.end_date><field.category>Networking</field.category><field.organizer>IKEA & SACC-Minnesota</field.organizer><field.email>info@saccmn.org</field.email><field.url>www.saccmn.org</field.url><field.street>IKEA Bloomington, 8000 IKEA Way</field.street><field.city>Bloomington</field.city><field.state>MN</field.state><field.country>US</field.country>
An engaging evening focused on sustainability, innovation, and Nordic leadership brings together business leaders and industry experts to explore how Nordic companies are translating ambitious sustainability goals into practical, real-world solutions.

This month’s activity is a “Page to Screen” as we have a brief discussion of the book and then watch the 2024 film adaptation together.
As always, there will be plenty of coffee and Scandinavian snacks to share. All are welcome. Come for the book, stay for the community. We can’t wait to see you there!

Book description: An artist and her six-year-old granddaughter spend a summer on a small island in the Gulf of Finland, gradually learning to understand each other’s fears, quirks, and desire for independence.

Author Tove Jansson, whose Moomintroll comic strip and books brought her international acclaim, lived much of her life on an island like the one described in “The Summer Book”, and the work can be enjoyed as her closely observed journal of the sounds, sights, and feel of a summer spent in intimate contact with the natural world.

Start date: 06 Jun 2026 10:00 AM
End date: 06 Jun 2026 11:00 AM
Category: Social
Organizer: Scandinavian Club
Name: Tiia
Email: news@thescandinavianclub.com
Phone: (203) 259-1571
Url: https://thescandinavianclub.com/upcoming-events/
Street / Address: 1351 S Pine Creek Rd
City: Fairfield
State: CT
Country: US
Midsummer Festival

<field.start_date>06 Jun 2026 11:00 AM</field.start_date><field.end_date>06 Jun 2026 03:00 PM</field.end_date><field.category>Celebration</field.category><field.organizer>Old Bakery & Emporium</field.organizer><field.url>www.austintexas.gov/old-bakery</field.url><field.street>1006 N Congress Ave</field.street><field.city>Austin</field.city><field.state>TX</field.state><field.country>US</field.country>
Our 5th Annual Midsummer Festival honoring the Old Bakery & Emporium's Swedish American heritage is FREE fun for the whole family!

As the stakes rise on the pitch, real-world pressures beyond it reveal a powerful story of legacy, rivalry, and the fragile line between friendship and ambition. What does it cost to be the best? And how high a price will one pay to be crowned the King of Kubb?"

See "Kings of Kubb," featuring a personalized recorded introduction from directors Steve Dayton and B.J. Hollars. If you're already a kubb pro, we know you'll want to see this exciting documentary and join us for some games of kubb (also called "viking chess") on the lawn afterward!

If you're wondering what kubb is, come find out! The Swedish lawn game has taken hold over the city of Eau Claire, Wisconsin--with a population of just 70,000, it hosts the largest weekly kubb league in the world and hosts the U.S. National Kubb Championship.
Filmmakers Dayton and Hollars illuminate the formation of the U.S. National Kubb Championship and what the sport means to its players, four in particular who are vying for the championship.

"It’s not quite bowling. It’s not quite bags. And it’s far more than “throwing sticks at blocks.” When the Nordic lawn game arrived in the United States, American players quickly discovered that even with skill, strategy, and mental toughness, kubb can break your heart … or heal it.

As we continue to grow this event, our goal is to make Midsummer a signature Swedish‑American moment in the nation’s capital—one that brings people together across backgrounds and perspectives, setting aside politics and differences to celebrate culture, community, and shared joy.

This year’s celebration also takes place as the United States marks its 250th anniversary, honoring our long-shared history that stretches back nearly four centuries, when the early settlers of New Sweden came to the Delaware river. Midsummer offers a joyful opportunity to celebrate these enduring ties and the close friendship between Sweden and the United States.

Last year, nearly 4,000 people—families, students, Washingtonians, and visitors from across the region—joined us on the lawn of the Sylvan Theater for an evening of dancing, music, and cultural exchange.

This year’s celebration builds on that energy with a lively program featuring classic Midsummer traditions such as flower wreath making, dancing around the Midsummer pole, and live performances, including a live DJ playing high-energy dance tunes. More details to come soon!

Bring your friends, your family, a flower wreath, a picnic blanket, and whatever food your heart desires—everyone is welcome to this free and festive celebration.

We look forward to welcoming you for an evening of summer light, culture, and community on the National Mall!

This Slow Flow class is a gently-paced vinyasa practice that invites you to move, breathe, and settle into your body — no experience necessary, all levels welcome.

Slow Flow sits in the sweet spot between active and easeful, blending softness with strength. Expect a continuous, fluid sequence of standing and seated poses, linked with breath and held just long enough to find your foundation and fully arrive in each shape. This is a mindful, accessible flow designed to move with intention rather than speed. We’ll close every session with a generous savasana so you leave feeling grounded and renewed.

Whether you’ve never stepped on a mat or you’ve been practicing for years, this class is designed to meet you exactly where you are.
Join Kate Holter, founder and owner of Flood Yoga, for three Sunday mornings this summer. We will be using the beautiful Osberg Great Hall and the Fisherman's Sun Terrace for an indoor/outdoor yoga experience.

Please bring:
A yoga mat
Water bottle
Blanket/towel or other personal props for extra support (if desired)

Pay What You Want. This class is offered as pay-what-you-want, making it accessible to all with proceeds supporting the Museum’s programs and exhibitions. ASI’s Midsommar Celebration welcomes everyone to observe one of Sweden’s favorite holidays by heading outside to enjoy live music, dancing around the majstång (maypole), and many family-friendly activities.

Whether you’re an ASI regular or curious to check out this Swedish holiday, all ages will find a campus ready to welcome summer with traditional foods, music, and dancing.
Make your own fresh flower head wreath, try out Midsommar specialties like Swedish strawberry cake, and meet artists at the pop-up market.
Or sit back and enjoy festive music from ASI’s affiliated music ensembles and special guests Lynx Lynx.

Please note this is one of ASI’s busiest days of the year, so tickets are sold in timed-entry slots before 1:30 p.m. Tickets at the door are available for $21 for all adults and free for youth under 18 after 1:30 pm. Folkdancers, live Scandinavian music, and a processional of girls in white carrying candles and stjärngosse (star boys) lead the crowd to the Bethany Lutheran Church where the annual St. Lucia is honored with a crown of candles. Stay awhile and enjoy ginger cookies served by Lucia herself.
