The exhibition features a remarkable collection of artifacts from World War II, original art for the film Pinocchio by Gustaf Tenggren, sandals worn by Greta Garbo, vintage SAAB parts and mid-century modern furniture. Play Swedish Fiddle Tunes on the Fretted Dulcimer

May 2, 2026. The Swedish fretted dulcimer has a storied history in Scandinavian music and instruments but is rooted in Swedish folk music. Tuning is the first lesson, 11:30 AM - 1 PM, in the beginners dulcimer playing workshop. Once in tune (D-A-D) it cant be played wrong! Strumming a simple tune is next and in about 10 minutes the music begins. Instructions with printed charts and playing in the morning session will be followed by a 2nd afternoon session, 3 PM - 4:30 PM, highlighting rhythm, fiddle tunes, and improvising. Join us to create your own customized aquavit blend for this years Midsummer! Scandinavia House and Björk Cafe & Bistro will present a special learning, crafting and tasting event in collaboration with Spritmuseumet in Stockholm, Sweden. Participants will learn about the Nordic spirits historyincluding its origins, evolving flavor profiles and traditionsthrough a video developed by Spritmuseumet. The First Lady Next Door - with Eliza Reid

On May 5, join us for a talk on The First Lady Next Door with Canadian-Icelandic author Eliza Reid, who from 2016 to 2024 was the First Lady of Iceland through her marriage to Icelandic President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson. In early 2016, Eliza Reids biggest daily goals were modest but meaningful: showering without one of her four kids bursting into the bathroom, juggling clients without dropping a deadline, and growing the writers retreat she was building from scratch. Gallery Tours | Inside Voices, Outside Light

On view from April 18 to June 20, 2026 at Scandinavia House, Inside Voices, Outside Light is a group exhibition featuring 21 contemporary artists from the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, and Norway. The show highlights the unique perspective of these North Atlantic territories, who share cultural and historic ties while each possessing distinct identities and communities. With works ranging across photography, paintings, textiles, film, and sculpture, including three site-specific installations, the exhibition also showcases the diversity and complexity of the region. In these guided tours, led by Emily Stoddart, ASFs Manager of Exhibitions and Community Programs, and the curator of the exhibition, and Eve OShea, ASFs Exhibitions and Cultural Programs Assistant, learn about the artists in this exhibition and their work. The Square | Silver Anniversary Rescreens

See The Square to wrap up our series of Silver Anniversary Rescreens! First screened at Scandinavia House in 2018, this gripping sociological suspense story by director Ruben Östlund dives into the ethics of moral responsibility, privilege, and media sensationalism. Christian is the respected curator of a contemporary art museum, a divorced but devoted father of two, who drives an electric car and supports good causes. A Century in the Making: 100 Years of ASHM

Discover how a century of change has shaped ASHM into the Museum you know today. The special Museum-wide exhibition A Century in the Making: 100 Years of ASHM invites visitors to journey through time and see how the American Swedish Historical Museum has evolved with a dynamic blend of past and present through rarely seen artifacts, captivating photographs, and personal stories. The exhibition includes original oil paintings of the 1926 Sesquicentennial Exposition on loan from the Atwater Kent Collection at Drexel University. This once-in-a-century exhibit looks to the past, honors, the present, and invites visitors to imagine ASHM's next 100 years. A Century in the Making: 100 Years of ASHM will be on view throughout the Museum galleries and around the Museums balcony space from May 10, 2026 to January 10, 2027. Admission is included with ASHM general tickets. ASHM is open Tuesday through Sunday 10:00 am 4:00 pm. The exhibit is made possible by grants from the Philadelphia Funders Collaborative for the Semiquincentennial and SWEA New Jersey. Water-based Painting Workshop

This adult workshop series offers a gentle introduction to the tactile qualities of materials such as paper, pastel, paint, graphite, and ink. Open to all levels, including new students, the series focuses on exploration, play, and the process of making rather than finished outcomes. Participants will experiment with a range of techniques across sessions, including acrylic and watercolor painting, pastel work, ink practices, drawing with graphite and charcoal, and creating sculptural forms from paper, while also engaging with relevant art history and contemporary art. Each class invites a meditative and attentive approach, encouraging students to discover inspiration from both inner and outer worlds. Sessions conclude with supportive group reflections that honor each participants process and discoveries. As part of the experience, students will also explore the 3rd floor gallery exhibition Inside Voices, Outside Light: Perspectives on West Nordic Art. In this course, students will explore and experiment with water-based colored paint and water using brushes on paper. The series can be taken as a full progression or as individual classes, with participation limited to 12 students aged 20 and above.

Beginners Knitting with Hilary Snell

Learn the knitting basics in a workshop led by Scandinavia Houses veteran knitter Hilary Snell! The long-term benefits of knitting are widely recognized. Once you know the basics, knitting can create whats called a flow state, similar to meditation. Knitting uses both sides of the brain, making it a healthy way to focus while also stretching your brain muscles. And there are only two stitches in knitting by combining those, you can create hundreds of designs and patterns! In this class designed for those who have never knit before, or beginners who would like to practice their stitches, youll learn to cast on, knit and purl. After learning these skills, youll be able to practice independently to make any projects you wish. Participants should bring size 9 US straight needles and some worsted weight yarn well provide a safe and friendly atmosphere to learn a new life-long skill!

Reflecting on Nordic designs pivotal role in Modernism in America during the 20th century, we turn again to the Nordic tradition for: Resilience meets well-being The four-part architecture series Nordic American Connections: Conversations on Architecture and Design engages contemporary Nordic and American architects and designers, highlighting their sustainable design approaches with an emphasis on award-winning projects that shape the American landscape. The fourth panel of the series, marking Scandinavia Houses 25th Anniversary, will close the series with contemporary Nordic American architects focusing on the challenges they face as designers in a rapidly changing environmentAI and technology, economic volatility, climate vulnerabilityand whats next for future practice. These design leaders will highlight their firms approaches to innovation, research and collaboration, and cross-cultural influences used in their work. They will share strategies embodied in Nordic design for resilience and wellbeing: use of mass timber and natural materials, alternative methods of construction, community building and complete design. Participants include Daniel Baumann, Principal and Design Director at Henning Larsen; Bjarke Ingels, founder of BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group; and Ingalill Wahlroos-Ritter, Director of Architecture for Communities Los Angeles (ACLA). In SEX, two male-identified colleagues who are happily married to women share candidly their secrets: one reveals his unprecedented recent sexual encounter with another man; the other is haunted by a recurring dream featuring David Bowie and his own gender fluidity. Both men shockingly yet with great sensitivity seek transparency and understanding with their wives. SEX thus envisions honest, warm-hearted possibilities for gender expansiveness within heterosexual monogamy, while also enacting the intricacy of an authentic and generous love. Superbly acted. He composed and performed the original instrumental track Bistro Fada which was the theme song for Woody Allens 2011 film Midnight in Paris. It introduced Wrembels acoustic guitar work to a wider audience and became his most widely known composition. Le Club du Sauna opened during the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki and often cited as potentially the first true nightclub in Finland. It was run by theater director Vivica Bandler with close friend and former lover of Bandler, artist Tove Jansson (of Moomin fame) was one of the key contributors to the clubs unique atmosphere and design.

Midsummer offers a joyful opportunity to celebrate these enduring ties and the close friendship between Sweden and the United States. Last year, nearly 4,000 peoplefamilies, students, Washingtonians, and visitors from across the regionjoined us on the lawn of the Sylvan Theater for an evening of dancing, music, and cultural exchange. Celebrate the longest day of the year, Swedish style! ASIs Midsommar Celebration welcomes everyone to observe one of Swedens favorite holidays by heading outside to enjoy live music, dancing around the majstång (maypole), and many family-friendly activities. Whether youre an ASI regular or curious to check out this Swedish holiday, all ages will find a campus ready to welcome summer with traditional foods, music, and dancing. Make your own fresh flower head wreath, try out Midsommar specialties like Swedish strawberry cake, and meet artists at the pop-up market. Or sit back and enjoy festive music from ASIs affiliated music ensembles and special guests Lynx Lynx. Please note this is one of ASIs busiest days of the year, so tickets are sold in timed-entry slots before 1:30 p.m. Tickets at the door are available for $21 for all adults and free for youth under 18 after 1:30 pm. Each ticket includes admission to the Turnblad Mansion and the brand-new exhibition, Eyes as Big as Plates; make-and-take crafts; and access to all performances and pop-up activities. Head wreath kits and a special festival menu from FIKA Café are available for purchase throughout the day. This event runs rain or shine, so please dress for the weather.

The U.S. National Kubb Championship started in 2007 with 15 teams and 35 players. The U.S National Kubb Championship is the oldest and largest kubb tournament outside Europe and one of the three largest in the world. A favorite Swedish holiday tradition, also observed in Lindsborg, is St. Lucia Festival celebrating the figure that is the emblem of light on a long winter day.
