This exhibition showcases the vibrant and dynamic work of Sámi artist Per Elof Nilsson Ricklund. With roots in the Sámi cultural landscape and a gaze turned toward philosophy, archaeology, and art history, he creates works that carry both memory and movement. His paintings emerge at the intersection between the silence of nature and the noise of civilization, where art becomes a way to understand both the world around us and the inner world.

The Midwest Art Exhibition was founded in 1899 by three local Lindsborg artists – Birger Sandzén, Carl Lotave, and G. N. Malm – as a complement to the annual Messiah Festival held at Bethany College. Today, it represents the longest running annual art exhibition in Kansas and features works by artists invited by the Sandzén Gallery or from the Gallery's permanent collection.

The Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery is located at 401 N. First Street. Hours are 10:00am-5:00pm Tuesday-Saturday, and 1:00-5:00pm on Sunday. Admission is free, with donations appreciated.

First screened at Scandinavia House in 2020, this contemporary environmental fable follows one Icelandic woman’s stubborn efforts to be on the right side of history.

Behind the scenes of her quiet routine, the independent 50-year-old Halla leads a double life as a passionate environmental activist. Known to others only by her alias “The Woman of the Mountain,” Halla secretly wages a one-woman-war on the local aluminium industry. As Halla’s actions grow bolder, from petty vandalism to outright industrial sabotage, she succeeds in pausing the negotiations between the Icelandic government and the corporation building a new aluminium smelter in the mountains.

But right as she begins planning her biggest and boldest operation yet, she receives an unexpected letter that changes everything: her application to adopt a child has finally been accepted, and a little girl is waiting for her in Ukraine. As Halla prepares to abandon her role as saboteur and savior of the Highlands to fulfill her dream of becoming a mother, she decides to plot one final attack to deal the aluminium industry a crippling blow.

In the Kalevala, the wise hero Väinämöinen creates the first kantele from the jawbone of a giant pike, stringing it with the hair of a stallion. After losing that instrument, he fashions a second kantele from birch wood. The music of the kantele holds magical power. When Väinämöinen plays, the entire natural world grows still to listen—people, animals, forests, and even the waters.

The kantele later became an important national symbol during Finland’s 19th century cultural awakening, when the Kalevala helped strengthen Finnish identity under Russian rule and prepared the nation for independence in 1917.

Today the instrument remains central to Finnish folk music, ranging from traditional five-string kanteles to modern 40-string concert instruments.

Start date: 18 Apr 2026 01:00 PM
End date: 18 Apr 2026 01:45 PM
Category: Entertainment
Organizer: National Nordic Museum
Name: National Nordic Museum
Email: nordic@nordicmuseum.org
Phone: 206.789.5707
Url: https://nordicmuseum.org/events/kalevala-festival-kantele-performance
Street / Address: 2655 NW Market Street
City: Seattle
State: WA
Country: US
Nordic Gala 2026

<field.start_date>18 Apr 2026 04:00 PM</field.start_date><field.end_date>18 Apr 2026 08:00 PM</field.end_date><field.category>Celebration</field.category><field.organizer>Nordic Culture Clubs</field.organizer><field.name>Tamara Eade</field.name><field.email>nordiccultureclubspres@aol.com</field.email><field.phone>701.526.6347</field.phone><field.url>https://nordiccultureclubs.net</field.url><field.street>909 19th Ave N</field.street><field.city>Fargo</field.city><field.state>ND</field.state><field.country>US</field.country>
Nordic Gala 2026 - Saturday April 18, 4-8pm with Dinner at 5pm

Step into a world where Swedish meatballs meet pop music, where streamlined design and functional minimalism redefined modern living, and where Nordic ingenuity brought about life-saving innovations.

From Taste to Tech explores the ways in which Nordic craftspeople, artists, chefs, and thinkers brought their values and visions to American soil: building churches, skyscrapers, and bridges in the 1930s, revolutionizing childhood with playful yet purposeful Lego toys, and transforming entertainment through cinematic storytelling and best-selling games like Minecraft, Angry Birds, and Candy Crush. From quintessentially Swedish brands you never knew had Nordic origins - like the implantable pacemaker or pizza rolls - there’s something for everyone in From Taste to Tech!

The exhibition features a remarkable collection of artifacts from World War II, original art for the film Pinocchio by Gustaf Tenggren, sandals worn by Greta Garbo, vintage SAAB parts and mid-century modern furniture.

From Taste to Tech: 100 Years of Nordic Innovation & Impact will be on view at ASHM from April 26, 2026 to February 7, 2027. Admission is included with ASHM general tickets.

The day begins at 10:00am with live holiday music downtown. Folkdancers, live Scandinavian music, and a processional of girls in white carrying candles and stjärngosse (star boys) lead the crowd to the Bethany Lutheran Church where the annual St. Lucia is honored with a crown of candles. Stay awhile and enjoy ginger cookies served by Lucia herself.
