Step into a world where Swedish meatballs meet pop music, where streamlined design and functional minimalism redefined modern living, and where Nordic ingenuity brought about life-saving innovations.

From Taste to Tech explores the ways in which Nordic craftspeople, artists, chefs, and thinkers brought their values and visions to American soil: building churches, skyscrapers, and bridges in the 1930s, revolutionizing childhood with playful yet purposeful Lego toys, and transforming entertainment through cinematic storytelling and best-selling games like Minecraft, Angry Birds, and Candy Crush. From quintessentially Swedish brands you never knew had Nordic origins - like the implantable pacemaker or pizza rolls - there’s something for everyone in From Taste to Tech!

The exhibition features a remarkable collection of artifacts from World War II, original art for the film Pinocchio by Gustaf Tenggren, sandals worn by Greta Garbo, vintage SAAB parts and mid-century modern furniture.

The final film in the series is Tove (2020), a biopic on the life of Tove Jansson, showing both her personal relationships, and the creation of the popular Moomin books.

About the film
Helsinki, 1945. The end of the war brings a new sense of artistic and social freedom for painter Tove Jansson. Modern art, dizzying parties and an open relationship with a married politician: Her unconventional life puts her at odds with her sculptor father's strict ideals. Tove's desire for liberty is put to the test when she meets theatre director Vivica Bandler. Her love for Vivica is electric and all-consuming but Tove begins to realise that the love she truly yearns has to be reciprocated. As she struggles with her personal life, her creative endeavours take her in an unexpected direction. While focusing her artistic dreams on her painting, the work that started as a side project, the melancholic, haunting tales she told scared children in bomb shelters, rapidly takes on a life of its own.

The exploits of the Moomins, infused with inspiration from her own life, bring Tove international fame and financial freedom. There's a daily comic strip, a stage play and stories that continue to delight people around the world. But as she begins to find her artistic identity she has to learn to find herself. Her unrequited love for Vivica is preventing her true liberty and only by learning to break away from her can she truly be free. Tove is a captivating drama about the creative energy of an iconic talent and her turbulent search for identity, desire and freedom.

Start date: 20 Aug 2026 06:30 PM
End date: 20 Aug 2026 08:00 PM
Category: Entertainment
Organizer: National Nordic Museum
Name: National Nordic Museum
Email: marketing@nordicmuseum.org
Phone: 2067895707
Url: https://nordicmuseum.org/events/moomin-movie-night-tove-2020
Street / Address: 2655 NW Market Street
City: Seattle
State: WA
Country: US
Crayfish Dinner Party

<field.start_date>21 Aug 2026 06:00 PM</field.start_date><field.end_date>21 Aug 2026 10:00 PM</field.end_date><field.category>Celebration</field.category><field.organizer>American Swedish Historical Museum</field.organizer><field.phone>215.389.1776</field.phone><field.url>www.americanswedish.org</field.url><field.street>1900 Pattison Avenue</field.street><field.city>Philadelphia</field.city><field.state>PA</field.state><field.country>US</field.country>
Summer means spending time in nature, getting together with friends and family, and of course, putting on funny hats and bibs to eat crayfish!
Best friends Laura and Alex set off on a summer Interrail adventure across Europe. After a night of partying in Warsaw, Laura wakes up naked in a stranger’s bed—and with no memory of what happened.
As the two young Swedes couchsurf their way across Prague, Berlin, and Paris, fragments of that night return and Laura’s doubts mount, pushing her to confront her own limits in a quest for truth and self-discovery.

Fanny Ovesen’s crackling coming-of-age debut relies on patient, attentive observation by letting emotional truth surface in small gestures. At the center of Live a Little is an intimate portrayal of female friendship, and Embla Ingelman-Sundberg’s breakout performance as Laura makes her a talent to watch.

Start date: 26 Aug 2026 07:00 PM
End date: 26 Aug 2026 09:00 PM
Category: Entertainment
Organizer: Scandinavia House
Name: Scandinavia House
Email: info@amscan.org
Phone: 2127793587
Url: https://www.scandinaviahouse.org/event/live-a-little/
Street / Address: 58 Park Avenue
City: New York
State: NY
Country: US
Gunhild Carling: Sweden’s Queen of Swing

<field.start_date>28 Aug 2026 05:00 PM</field.start_date><field.end_date>28 Aug 2026 06:30 PM</field.end_date><field.category>Entertainment</field.category><field.organizer>The Belvedere at Crooners</field.organizer><field.phone>(763) 760-0062</field.phone><field.url>www.gunhildcarling.net</field.url><field.street>6161 Highway 65 NE</field.street><field.city>Minneapolis</field.city><field.state>MN</field.state><field.country>US</field.country>
Swedish musical sensation Gunhild Carling is an internationally acclaimed superstar!

A box office hit in Norway, this gripping true story of courage under fire recounts the decisive actions of Colonel Birger Eriksen, whose fateful choice shaped Norway’s destiny.

9 April 1940. Norway stands under siege as German warships steam toward Oslo. Colonel Birger Eriksen (Bjørn Sundquist), commander of the undermanned Oscarsborg Fortress, has no reinforcements, no clear orders, and time is slipping away. In a bold decision that alters history, he orders the launch of the first shots against the invasion, sinking the heavy cruiser Blücher in a stunning blow.

In a symbol of defiance, they heroically stall the enemy advance and buy precious hours before a full-scale occupation can take hold. Yet victory comes at a steep cost. For ten gruelling hours, Eriksen and his brave garrison endure relentless German bombardment, trapped on their island stronghold. With shells raining down and the fortress crumbling amid the chaos of unyielding assault, Eriksen fights not only to protect his beleaguered nation, but to safeguard the lives of his closest comrades and family.

Start date: 02 Sep 2026 07:00 PM
End date: 02 Sep 2026 09:00 PM
Category: Entertainment
Organizer: Scandinavia House
Name: Scandinavia House
Email: info@amscan.org
Phone: 2127793587
Url: https://www.scandinaviahouse.org/event/battle-of-oslo/
Street / Address: 58 Park Avenue
City: New York
State: NY
Country: US
NORDIC TEXTILE TAKEOVER: The Cold Stitch

<field.start_date>04 Sep 2026 12:00 PM</field.start_date><field.end_date>16 Sep 2026 12:00 PM</field.end_date><field.category>Exhibit</field.category><field.organizer>Scandinavia House</field.organizer><field.name>Scandinavia House</field.name><field.email>info@amscan.org</field.email><field.phone>2127793587</field.phone><field.url>https://www.scandinaviahouse.org/event/textile-takeover-the-cold-stitch/</field.url><field.street>58 Park Avenue</field.street><field.city>New York</field.city><field.state>NY</field.state><field.country>US</field.country>
In partnership with New York Textile Month, Scandinavia House is pleased to present the third iteration of NORDIC TEXTILE TAKEOVER, an exhibition, workshop series, and symposium highlighting contemporary Nordic Textiles, coinciding with NY Textile Month in New York City.

Danish filmmaker Emilie Thalund’s debut feature shines a light on self-acceptance, friendship, desire and growing up.

“A smart, striking debut” (Leslie Felperin, The Hollywood Reporter)

Fifteen-year-old Lea is spending her summer at a health camp tucked between the forest and the sea. Her new roommate, Sasha, is everything Lea wishes she could be: bold, magnetic, and unafraid to take up space in the world. While Sasha flirts with the local boys, Lea’s gaze is fixed on Rune, the camp’s charming instructor. When Rune reciprocates her attention, something awakens within Lea; an unfamiliar yet thrilling desire.

Winner of the New Directors Competition at the San Sebastián Film Festival 2025 and the FIPRESCI Prize at this year’s Göteborg Film Festival, WEIGHTLESS has already enjoyed major festival success.
From debut director Emilie Thalund, the film presents a bold and intimate exploration of adolescent desire and identity, following 15-year-old Lea during a transformative summer, capturing the delicate balance between longing, self-discovery, and the complexities of emerging sexuality. This poignant coming-of-age story offers a fresh and honest voice in contemporary cinema.

Start date: 09 Sep 2026 07:00 PM
End date: 09 Sep 2026 09:00 PM
Category: Entertainment
Organizer: Scandinavia House
Name: Scandinavia House
Email: info@amscan.org
Phone: 2127793587
Url: https://www.scandinaviahouse.org/event/weightless/
Street / Address: 58 Park Avenue
City: New York
State: NY
Country: US
Scandinavian music: Jennifer Gersten in concert

<field.start_date>10 Sep 2026 07:30 PM</field.start_date><field.end_date>10 Sep 2026 08:30 PM</field.end_date><field.category>Entertainment</field.category><field.organizer>Scandinavia House</field.organizer><field.name>Scandinavia House</field.name><field.email>info@amscan.org</field.email><field.phone>2127793587</field.phone><field.url>https://www.scandinaviahouse.org/event/jennifer-gersten-concert/</field.url><field.street>58 Park Avenue</field.street><field.city>New York</field.city><field.state>NY</field.state><field.country>US</field.country>
Violinist Jennifer Gersten, a two-time ASF fellow in music, delivers an imaginative program of six solo violin works by experimental Scandinavia-based composers, three of which will be presented for the first time in the United States.
These works push the violin to its dynamic and timbral extremes, traversing strange territories of far-flung birds, fragmented mutterings, and butterfly wingflaps. “A warmly melancholic, affirmative slice of imperfect humanity”

Set in the small, rustic town of Åmotfors in the Swedish region of Värmland, close to the Norwegian border, the film follows father Olof and daughter Lise who long for connection and carry shared grief in different ways. Like his forefathers, beekeeper Olof (a stellar Adam Lundgren) keeps bees and drives a snowplough in wintertime to keep the bills paid for his family, consisting of his mother, sister and his prickly teenage daughter Lise.

With a delicate touch, the film deftly captures life in the countryside, portraying both the everyday and the existential, from the humming of beehives to a relationship on the verge of collapse.

Directed and co-written by Marcus Carlsson, who co-wrote the script with star Adam Lundgren, and featuring an atmospheric score by Janne Schaffer, this is a sensitive story of loss, silence, longing for closeness, hope and facing our fears.

Start date: 16 Sep 2026 07:00 PM
End date: 16 Sep 2026 09:00 PM
Category: Entertainment
Organizer: Scandinavia House
Name: Scandinavia House
Email: info@amscan.org
Phone: 2127793587
Url: https://www.scandinaviahouse.org/event/the-quiet-beekeeper-new-nordic-cinema/
Street / Address: 58 Park Avenue
City: New York
State: NY
Country: US
Holiday Gift Show

<field.start_date>08 Nov 2026 01:00 PM</field.start_date><field.end_date>10 Jan 2027 05:00 PM</field.end_date><field.category>Exhibit</field.category><field.organizer>Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery</field.organizer><field.name>Diane Reece</field.name><field.email>travelinfo@lindsborgcity.org</field.email><field.phone>7852272220</field.phone><field.url>https://www.visitlindsborg.com/</field.url><field.street>401 N First St.</field.street><field.city>Lindsborg</field.city><field.state>KS</field.state><field.country>US</field.country>
The popular Holiday Gift Show is a highlight with work of over 50 invited artists are represented in the show and include paintings, prints, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, mixed media pieces, and more. The day begins at 10:00am with live holiday music downtown. Folkdancers, live Scandinavian music, and a processional of girls in white carrying candles and stjärngosse (star boys) lead the crowd to the Bethany Lutheran Church where the annual St. Lucia is honored with a crown of candles. Stay awhile and enjoy ginger cookies served by Lucia herself.
