A Century in the Making: 100 Years of ASHM

Discover how a century of change has shaped ASHM into the Museum you know today. The special Museum-wide exhibition A Century in the Making: 100 Years of ASHM invites visitors to journey through time and see how the American Swedish Historical Museum has evolved with a dynamic blend of past and present through rarely seen artifacts, captivating photographs, and personal stories. The exhibition includes original oil paintings of the 1926 Sesquicentennial Exposition on loan from the Atwater Kent Collection at Drexel University. This once-in-a-century exhibit looks to the past, honors, the present, and invites visitors to imagine ASHM's next 100 years. A Century in the Making: 100 Years of ASHM will be on view throughout the Museum galleries and around the Museums balcony space from May 10, 2026 to January 10, 2027. Admission is included with ASHM general tickets. ASHM is open Tuesday through Sunday 10:00 am 4:00 pm. The exhibit is made possible by grants from the Philadelphia Funders Collaborative for the Semiquincentennial and SWEA New Jersey. Funding for the American Swedish Historical Museum is supported by grants from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the Philadelphia Cultural Fund, the ASHM Auxiliary, Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation, Midsommarklubben, Red Moose Charitable Trust, and an anonymous foundation.

Moomin Movie Night: Tove

This summer, we're hosting a series of Moomin Movie Nights inspired by our current special exhibitions, Moomins' Sea Adventures and Tove and the Sea. The final film in the series is Tove (2020), a biopic on the life of Tove Jansson, showing both her personal relationships, and the creation of the popular Moomin books. About the film Helsinki, 1945. The end of the war brings a new sense of artistic and social freedom for painter Tove Jansson. Modern art, dizzying parties and an open relationship with a married politician: Her unconventional life puts her at odds with her sculptor father's strict ideals. Tove's desire for liberty is put to the test when she meets theatre director Vivica Bandler. Her love for Vivica is electric and all-consuming but Tove begins to realise that the love she truly yearns has to be reciprocated. As she struggles with her personal life, her creative endeavours take her in an unexpected direction. While focusing her artistic dreams on her painting, the work that started as a side project, the melancholic, haunting tales she told scared children in bomb shelters, rapidly takes on a life of its own. The exploits of the Moomins, infused with inspiration from her own life, bring Tove international fame and financial freedom. There's a daily comic strip, a stage play and stories that continue to delight people around the world. But as she begins to find her artistic identity she has to learn to find herself. Her unrequited love for Vivica is preventing her true liberty and only by learning to break away from her can she truly be free. Tove is a captivating drama about the creative energy of an iconic talent and her turbulent search for identity, desire and freedom.

Violinist Jennifer Gersten, a two-time ASF fellow in music, delivers an imaginative program of six solo violin works by experimental Scandinavia-based composers, three of which will be presented for the first time in the United States. These works push the violin to its dynamic and timbral extremes, traversing strange territories of far-flung birds, fragmented mutterings, and butterfly wingflaps. SEA-Nordic Film Festival

Celebrating Queer Nordic Cinema in the Pacific Northwest! The 2026 SEA-Nordic Film Festival showcases LGBTQ+ stories from across the Nordic region. Trace the history of queer representation in Nordic cinema in this week-long festival highlighting queer love, gender exploration, and cultural identity. This festival includes one of the first overt representations of gay relationships in cinema alongside contemporary films that showcase the diversity of LGBTQ+ experiences. The Nordic landscape sets the stage for beautiful cinematography and memorable stories you will want to revisit. This year, the Festival will be hosted in Osberg Great Hall at the National Nordic Museum. Screenings will occur over an entire week and will include short films, talk backs with academics and artists, and a collaborative art project. Held from September 15-19, evening screenings from Tuesday to Friday and a full-day experience to cap off the Festival on Saturday. Tuesday 9/15 - Friday 9/18: screenings beginning at 6 PM Saturday 9/19: 11 AM - 9:30 PM

Bloom Brooch Workshop

Inspired by trend forecaster Li Edelkoorts prediction that Extravagant Brooches are trending, well make one ourselves! Join celebrated textile and performance artist Heidi Hankaniemi on a quest to repurpose vintage embroideries and sew a brooch on a backing of industrial felt with a brooch clasp. Materials are provided, but if you have any old embroideries that you think are fitting and you wish to repurpose, please bring those. Together, well create one-of-a-kind brooches by repurposing vintage floral embroideries and laces into wearable art. No sewing skills required. This program will take place in this weekends NORDIC TEXTILE TAKEOVER.

Swedish movie: The Quiet Beekeeper

See the poignant, meditative family drama The Quiet Beekeeper! Winner of the Audience Award at the 2026 Göteborg Film Festival, The Quiet Beekeeper is a quiet and deeply affecting drama inspired by real-life events exploring love, nature, and the cycles of life. A warmly melancholic, affirmative slice of imperfect humanity Set in the small, rustic town of Åmotfors in the Swedish region of Värmland, close to the Norwegian border, the film follows father Olof and daughter Lise who long for connection and carry shared grief in different ways. Like his forefathers, beekeeper Olof (a stellar Adam Lundgren) keeps bees and drives a snowplough in wintertime to keep the bills paid for his family, consisting of his mother, sister and his prickly teenage daughter Lise. With a delicate touch, the film deftly captures life in the countryside, portraying both the everyday and the existential, from the humming of beehives to a relationship on the verge of collapse. Directed and co-written by Marcus Carlsson, who co-wrote the script with star Adam Lundgren, and featuring an atmospheric score by Janne Schaffer, this is a sensitive story of loss, silence, longing for closeness, hope and facing our fears.

Holiday Gift Show

The popular Holiday Gift Show is a highlight with work of over 50 invited artists are represented in the show and include paintings, prints, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, mixed media pieces, and more. Wonderful, unique gifts for discerning shoppers can be found at the Holiday Gift Show. The Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery is located at 401 N. First Street. Hours are 10:00am-5:00pm Tuesday-Saturday, and 1:00-5:00pm on Sunday. Admission is free, with donations appreciated. Docent tours for groups are available by two-week advance appointment. St. Lucia Festival

A favorite Swedish holiday tradition, also observed in Lindsborg, is St. Lucia Festival celebrating the figure that is the emblem of light on a long winter day. The day begins at 10:00am with live holiday music downtown. Folkdancers, live Scandinavian music, and a processional of girls in white carrying candles and stjärngosse (star boys) lead the crowd to the Bethany Lutheran Church where the annual St. Lucia is honored with a crown of candles.
