A much-hyped early season title between championship contenders proved to be no contest as Malmö FF easily swept aside IFK Göteborg, spoiling the Angels’ home opener April 7 at Gamla Ullevi Stadium.
Guillermo Molins scored twice in the first half as Malmö put on a technical display Göteborg simply could not match.
“Malmö put in an exemplary effort in the first half,” admitted IFK Göteborg head coach Mikael Stahre. “Our effort was weak.”
Malmö needed just eight minutes to establish itself as the clear favorite for the 2014 title. Defender Miko Albornoz picked out Molins with a cross that Molins slammed past Göteborg net minder John Alvbåge. Molins struck again 20 minutes later, this time off a pass from Markus Rosenberg. The Malmö captain nearly hit a third but his shot in the 36th minute.
The first-half dominance gave Malmö something of a false sense of confidence. Göteborg came out early in the second half and shocked the home side with a flurry of attacks. Robin Söder, Sam Larsson and Lasse Vibe all saw shots sail just wide after Göteborg was able to shred the Malmö defense. The Angels maintained their pressure throughout most of the second half, but their relentless attack left them open to counters and in the 82nd minute, Markus Rosenberg made them pay. Rosenberg took a pass from Magnus Eriksson and beat Alvbåge to the far post, giving Malmö an unassailable 3-0 lead.
“This was a game of two halves,” said Malmö manager Åge Hareide. “We dominated the first half and they played very well in the second half. The third goal was very important.”
