Lotta Schelin will have her chance to break the all-time scoring mark for Swedish international soccer when Sweden takes on Germany in a friendly match October 29 at the Behrn Arena in Örebro.
Schelin is currently tied with former Swedish international Hanna Ljungberg for the most goals with 72. She tied the record Sept. 17 when she scored once in Sweden’s 2-0 win over Scotland. The victory sealed Sweden's progress to the 2015 Women’s World Cup in Canada next summer.
“The match against Germany will be more than an exhibition. It will have a lot of meaning,” said Sweden assistant coach Lilie Persson. “Therese Sjögran can get her 200th cap and Lotta could score her record goal.”
Schelin equaled Lungberg’s mark in the 76th minute of the win over Scotland. Despite her best efforts and repeated attempts by her teammates to set up goal 73, Schelin was unable to top the record.
“It was nice (to score the record-tying goal). I was nervous before the game,” Schelin said. “The number one priority was to win the match. The World Cup will be great but we have a lot of work to do if we are to win the gold.”
The 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup opens June 6.
