Tailor-made success

Swedish start-up delivers close to 150 suits to Hollywood and the production of The Hunger Games.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 opened one of the last weekends of November; biggest domestic debut of 2014 but, at an estimated $123 million, opening far below industry expectations, which expected the film to open closer to $150 million. The Hunger Games franchise has, however, been an unquestionable hit for a Swedish online suit maker.

Three years ago, the Swedish start-up Suitopia had just four employees when the company received an order for several suits to be worn in the Hunger Games movie, filmed and produced in the United States. Since then Suitopia sales have increased fivefold — benefitting from the success of the film and its series, which stars Jennifer Lawrence, Donald Sutherland and Liam Hemsworth.
The Stockholm company, which is set for an SEK 20 million ($2,670,000) turnover this year, began business making clothing for weddings or graduations in a wide range of vibrant colors. The movie’s style and costume team never really explained why they chose Suitopia, "but I think at that time we were one of only a few companies offering such a range of crazy colors,” said Suitopia’s business development manager Peter Holmgren. After the initial order, Suitopia was asked to make more and more suits, totaling 150 by the time the third installment of the Hunger Games series, Mockingjay, began production.
