While it’s a foregone conclusion that American students will pay their own way for a school trip to a faraway city or foreign country, a school in Täby, Sweden is under scrutiny for having broken the rules of a free school: High school students were asked to pay $800 for a class trip to Spain.

According to one report, the teacher said all students should go because it would affect their study and knowledge. However, though there is an agreement that everyone, even those who can’t otherwise afford to travel, should get help with payment, a student who could not pay for the trip got no assistance with the payment.

The Schools Inspectorate believes that Täby has not complied with the provisions on free education. The principal of the school is responsible and must now take action. There is, for example, a change coming to the policy on school fees.
