The men's choir Orphei Drängar ("Orphei farmhands") was established in restaurateur Österberg’s banquet hall on Old Forum Square in Uppsala, Sweden. It was October 1853 and the city was isolated because of the risk of cholera, and little entertainment was available. First tenor Jonas Widén gathered three singers, conductor Oscar Arpi, leader of the Allmänna Sången (then) male choir, a pianist, and, to be on the safe side, a spectator. One of the pieces they sang was Carl Michael Bellman’s piece Fredman’s Epistle No. 14, “Hör, I Orphei Drängar,” which soon became the society’s call to attention.
Renowned Swedish choir leader Eric Ericson was its conductor from 1951 until 1991. Robert Sund, who leads the choir on the present tour was its conductor between 1985 and 2008 when Cecilia Rydinger Alin took over the baton. Their tours of Sweden are complemented by concert tours all over the world. The veterans of the choir visited the most recent Lindsborg Hyllningsfest in Lindsborg, KS in 2015.
