The spring’s final CEO luncheon was held at Restaurant Aquavit on June 9, and featured guest speaker Anna Throne-Holst, former Southampton Town Supervisor, who is a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Congress. She may be the first Norway-born, Sweden-raised and America-educated politician to run for a Congressional seat, and she also hopes to become the first female representative from the 1st Congressional District of New York.

Throne-Holst spoke a good deal about her family, describing how her great-grandfather, industrialist Johan Throne-Holst, was a Norwegian political activist who held a position that was similar to Thorne-Holst’s in Southampton. “I have political blood in my DNA,” she said. Even so, running for office was not something she ever envisioned. “Life has a way of taking us in directions we don’t always plan,” she said.
As a student at American University, Throne-Holst dreamed about going into the foreign services. Instead she wound up in New York, where she met and married her husband. They moved to Suffolk County to raise their family, and Throne-Holst got actively involved in the local community. She co-founded the Hayground School in Bridgehampton, an elementary school dedicated to providing a first-rate education for students from all walks of life. She also served as the executive director of the Bridgehampton Child Care and Recreational Center, where she was responsible for all areas of management — from planning and oversight to program and staff development and fundraising.
In 2007, the mother of four was elected to the Southampton Town Council. Two years later, she was elected to the position of Town Supervisor and subsequently was re-elected in 2011 and 2013. Among the many issues she is passionate about are universal early childhood education and the pressing need to address climate change. As she concluded her remarks, Throne-Holst said, “I am there for the platform, not the politics.”
