Freeskier from Sweden dies in tragic accident
Swedish freeskier Matilda Rapaport has died after a tragic accident in an avalanche. She was skiing during a filming trip on July 14 in a steep area of the Farrellones ski area in Chile, which has received record amounts of snowfall this year. On her second run Rapaport, 30, was swept away and buried by an avalanche. Rescuers recovered her quickly, but she was in a coma and intensive care until her death at a Santiago hospital on July 18. Her manager Håkan Hansson said she was skiing the slopes on her own.

"She is one of the world's best skiers, but there was too much snow and she fell in the snow. She was wearing all the safety equipment, but did not have time to release the airbag because she was so focused on outrunning the avalanche." Rapaport, who was born in Stockholm, ranked 4th in the 2016 Freeride World Tour and was also involved in a series of film projects. She married her longtime boyfriend, Swedish slalom star Mattias Hargin, just three months ago; she is the niece of Swedish actress Alexandra Rapaport.
