Rain, rain, and then some rain
“The best one can do when it’s raining is to let it rain,” American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow said. He should have seen Jönköping the other day, when 68 millimeters (or 2.6 inches) of rain came down in just one hour. As a result of this record shower, the city was knocked out. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Jan-Erik Bengtsson, head of the sewage system in Jönköping. The downpour was heavy but luckily short. Several buildings, including the county hospital and the mall A6, were flooded and the activity ceased. The important highway E4, which runs through Jönköping, was also flooded and cars were forced to turn around and drive against traffic in order to escape the waters. Bengtsson called it a “100-årsregn”, a 100-year rain, which is a rain that according to statistics only occurs once every hundred years.
