Koster Islands

As west as it gets among inhabited areas in Sweden.

The Koster Islands (Kosteröarna) are located in the Skagerakk strait, 6 miles (10 km) west of Strömstad, Sweden. An archipelago of smaller skerries surrounds the two largest islands, South Koster and North Koster. South Koster has an area of 2,000 acres (8 km2) and North Koster has an area of 1,000 acres (4 km2).

The powerful, warm Gulf Stream affects the islands creating a pleasant microclimate. South and North Koster are lively communities with a permanent population of around 340. Both farming and fishing are important, and already during the 1600s Koster exported lobster to Holland.
An electrically driven ferry operates constantly between the two islands, a distance of less than 200 feet. Restrictions regarding the right of access, Allemansrätten, forbid open fires, and camping is only allowed at the designated campsite. Private cars are not permitted.
Koster is a popular tourist destination, attracting close to 100,000 tourists each year, and is renowned for being one of Sweden's sunniest places.
