While terrorist groups continue to threaten attacks throughout Europe, today Iraqi intelligence services reportedly warned Sweden of a terror plot against civilians in Stockholm. Major public events are rarely prime targets for terrorists, but Swedish police are assessing the information and working closely with national and international partners. The threat level has not been raised, but it is at “an elevated level.”
Swedish media is reporting that police are reconsidering security measures for the 70th birthday of King Carl Gustaf, for whom week-long festivities have already begun ahead of his birthday on April 30. U.S. citizens should exercise vigilance when in public places or using mass transportation. Be aware of immediate surroundings and avoid crowded places. Exercise particular caution during religious holidays and at large festivals or events.
