Gotland – prettiest from space!
We're happy to report that yet another Swedish beauty has won an international competition. This time the beauty is Gotland.
Yes, Gotland has won NASA’s beauty competition. NASA launched the first Landsat satellite in 1972 as a way to monitor and record global changes on our planet. Now, the Landsat team is celebrating 40 years of continuous observational power, and as part of the celebrations, NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey asked the public to vote on 120 images that the USGS selected and digitally colored.
The winner in this “Earth as Art” contest is the Swedish island of Gotland, which is likened to a Van Gogh painting.
Reports NASA: "In the style of Van Gogh's painting ‘Starry Night’, massive congregations of greenish phytoplankton swirl in the dark water around Gotland, a Swedish island in the Baltic Sea. Population explosions, or blooms, of phytoplankton, like the one shown here, occur when deep currents bring nutrients up to sunlit surface waters, fueling the growth and reproduction of these tiny plants."
Second place in the contest went to the Yukon Delta, third place to the Mississippi River, fourth to Algeria’s Erg Iguidi sand dunes, and on fifth place Australia’s Lake Eyre.
