December 18 in Swedish History
1884: The first issue of Svenska Dagbladet is published on December 18 in 1884, only twelve years after the first issue of Nordstjernan hits the streets of the Eastern seaboard of the United States.

Svenska Dagbladet, or ”Svenskan” as it is more commonly called, is a daily newspaper. The first issue provides coverage of national and international news, as well as local coverage of the greater Stockholm area. Svenska Dagbladet has the third largest circulation after Dagens Nyheter and Göteborgs-Posten (in 2013 it had 159,700 print subscribers and a reach of a little over 400,000. Most Swedish dailies have been losing between 25 and 30% of their print circulation over the last 10 years).
The newspaper’s stated position of the editorial page is ”independently moderate” (oberoende moderat), meaning it is independent but adheres to the liberal conservatism of the Moderate Party. Since 1925, Svenska Dagbladet has awarded an individual sportsperson or a team the Svenska Dagbladet Gold Medal at the end of each year.
