From Taste to Tech explores the ways in which Nordic craftspeople, artists, chefs, and thinkers brought their values and visions to American soil: building churches, skyscrapers, and bridges in the 1930s, revolutionizing childhood with playful yet purposeful Lego toys, and transforming entertainment through cinematic storytelling and best-selling games like Minecraft, Angry Birds, and Candy Crush. From quintessentially Swedish brands you never knew had Nordic origins - like the implantable pacemaker or pizza rolls - theres something for everyone in From Taste to Tech! The exhibition features a remarkable collection of artifacts from World War II, original art for the film Pinocchio by Gustaf Tenggren, sandals worn by Greta Garbo, vintage SAAB parts and mid-century modern furniture. A Century in the Making: 100 Years of ASHM

Discover how a century of change has shaped ASHM into the Museum you know today. The special Museum-wide exhibition A Century in the Making: 100 Years of ASHM invites visitors to journey through time and see how the American Swedish Historical Museum has evolved with a dynamic blend of past and present through rarely seen artifacts, captivating photographs, and personal stories. The exhibition includes original oil paintings of the 1926 Sesquicentennial Exposition on loan from the Atwater Kent Collection at Drexel University. This once-in-a-century exhibit looks to the past, honors, the present, and invites visitors to imagine ASHM's next 100 years. A Century in the Making: 100 Years of ASHM will be on view throughout the Museum galleries and around the Museums balcony space from May 10, 2026 to January 10, 2027. Admission is included with ASHM general tickets. ASHM is open Tuesday through Sunday 10:00 am 4:00 pm. The exhibit is made possible by grants from the Philadelphia Funders Collaborative for the Semiquincentennial and SWEA New Jersey. Funding for the American Swedish Historical Museum is supported by grants from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the Philadelphia Cultural Fund, the ASHM Auxiliary, Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation, Midsommarklubben, Red Moose Charitable Trust, and an anonymous foundation.

Join us on September 12 for a program and opening reception for The Cold Stitch. An introduction by Emily Stoddart, Co-Curator of The Cold Stitch and Manager of Exhibitions and Community Programs at Scandinavia House, will be followed by artist talks by Nora Martine Hjelle Strand, Thorunn Elisabet Sveinsdottir, and Ingunn Fjóla IngÞórsdóttir, all of whom are presenting work in this years exhibition. SEA-Nordic Film Festival

Celebrating Queer Nordic Cinema in the Pacific Northwest! The 2026 SEA-Nordic Film Festival showcases LGBTQ+ stories from across the Nordic region. Trace the history of queer representation in Nordic cinema in this week-long festival highlighting queer love, gender exploration, and cultural identity. This festival includes one of the first overt representations of gay relationships in cinema alongside contemporary films that showcase the diversity of LGBTQ+ experiences. The Nordic landscape sets the stage for beautiful cinematography and memorable stories you will want to revisit. This year, the Festival will be hosted in Osberg Great Hall at the National Nordic Museum. Screenings will occur over an entire week and will include short films, talk backs with academics and artists, and a collaborative art project. Held from September 15-19, evening screenings from Tuesday to Friday and a full-day experience to cap off the Festival on Saturday. Swedish movie: The Quiet Beekeeper

See the poignant, meditative family drama The Quiet Beekeeper! Winner of the Audience Award at the 2026 Göteborg Film Festival, The Quiet Beekeeper is a quiet and deeply affecting drama inspired by real-life events exploring love, nature, and the cycles of life. A warmly melancholic, affirmative slice of imperfect humanity Set in the small, rustic town of Åmotfors in the Swedish region of Värmland, close to the Norwegian border, the film follows father Olof and daughter Lise who long for connection and carry shared grief in different ways. Like his forefathers, beekeeper Olof (a stellar Adam Lundgren) keeps bees and drives a snowplough in wintertime to keep the bills paid for his family, consisting of his mother, sister and his prickly teenage daughter Lise. With a delicate touch, the film deftly captures life in the countryside, portraying both the everyday and the existential, from the humming of beehives to a relationship on the verge of collapse. Hemslöjd: Dala Pig Painting

Hemslöjd Craft Series: Dala Pig Painting Like the more familiar Dala horses (dalahästar), Dala pigs (dalagrisar) have been hand-carved and painted in the Dalarna region of Sweden for generations. During this hands-on workshop, participants will paint their own Dala pig while learning the traditional art of Dala painting. Annika Gyllenhaal will demonstrate the painting styles and techniques using vintage Dala horses and pigs from a local collection, which will be on display throughout the workshop. Each participant will receive a hand-carved, unpainted Dala pig to decorate. You may choose to paint a traditional design or create your own interpretation. $70/Members, $80/Nonmembers. The Cinema of Ingmar Bergman

Explore the works of Ingmar Bergman, Sweden's most influential film maker, with Professor Thomas Birnie. Ingmar Bergman was one of the most influential film directors of all time, and his works have inspired a host of other filmmakers, including Woody Allen, whose reverence for Bergman is reflected in his own works. Bergmans films evolved in several distinct stages over five decades and reverberate with psychological and philosophical themes that explore the depths of the human psyche. This course will introduce participants to the major films of Bergman, beginning with his early productions in the 1950s and culminating half a century later. Among topics to be explored and discussed will be personal relationships, faith, identity, alienation and redemption. All films are in Swedish, with English subtitles. Lille Fredag Happy Hour

Lille Fredag happy hour is for young adults in the Twin Cities with Nordic roots or connections. This gathering aims to bring people together, foster new friendships, and strengthen connections within the local Nordic community. FREE! Hosted by Karvel Schram, an Icelandic native and former resident of Denmark, along with a group of friends, the event was created to connect people from across all the Nordic countries, celebrate shared heritage, and learn from one anothers unique traditions and experiences. Gathering will also help engage younger generations who may not yet be actively involved in Nordic organizations and create an accessible entry point into the broader community in the Twin Cities. Create a Kjolväskor

This two-day class with Natalie Norman focuses on making a kjolväskor (a skirt pocket or purse) featuring appliqué and embroidered designs. Swedish kjolväskor were part of the Swedish folk dräkt (folk dress) and were used to carry oats or salt so the cows would follow the herder home. Today, they may hold a cell phone or car keys. This practical decorative bag serves as a reminder of heritage and as a focal point of beauty, as it carries your belongings. Ages 15+.

A favorite Swedish holiday tradition, also observed in Lindsborg, is St. Lucia Festival celebrating the figure that is the emblem of light on a long winter day. The day begins at 10:00am with live holiday music downtown. Folkdancers, live Scandinavian music, and a processional of girls in white carrying candles and stjärngosse (star boys) lead the crowd to the Bethany Lutheran Church where the annual St. Lucia is honored with a crown of candles.
