Step into a world where Swedish meatballs meet pop music, where streamlined design and functional minimalism redefined modern living, and where Nordic ingenuity brought about life-saving innovations.

From Taste to Tech explores the ways in which Nordic craftspeople, artists, chefs, and thinkers brought their values and visions to American soil: building churches, skyscrapers, and bridges in the 1930s, revolutionizing childhood with playful yet purposeful Lego toys, and transforming entertainment through cinematic storytelling and best-selling games like Minecraft, Angry Birds, and Candy Crush. From quintessentially Swedish brands you never knew had Nordic origins - like the implantable pacemaker or pizza rolls - there’s something for everyone in From Taste to Tech!

The exhibition features a remarkable collection of artifacts from World War II, original art for the film Pinocchio by Gustaf Tenggren, sandals worn by Greta Garbo, vintage SAAB parts and mid-century modern furniture.

A box office hit in Norway, this gripping true story of courage under fire recounts the decisive actions of Colonel Birger Eriksen, whose fateful choice shaped Norway’s destiny.

9 April 1940. Norway stands under siege as German warships steam toward Oslo. Colonel Birger Eriksen (Bjørn Sundquist), commander of the undermanned Oscarsborg Fortress, has no reinforcements, no clear orders, and time is slipping away. In a bold decision that alters history, he orders the launch of the first shots against the invasion, sinking the heavy cruiser Blücher in a stunning blow.

In a symbol of defiance, they heroically stall the enemy advance and buy precious hours before a full-scale occupation can take hold. Yet victory comes at a steep cost. For ten gruelling hours, Eriksen and his brave garrison endure relentless German bombardment, trapped on their island stronghold. With shells raining down and the fortress crumbling amid the chaos of unyielding assault, Eriksen fights not only to protect his beleaguered nation, but to safeguard the lives of his closest comrades and family.

Start date: 02 Sep 2026 07:00 PM
End date: 02 Sep 2026 09:00 PM
Category: Entertainment
Organizer: Scandinavia House
Name: Scandinavia House
Email: info@amscan.org
Phone: 2127793587
Url: https://www.scandinaviahouse.org/event/battle-of-oslo/
Street / Address: 58 Park Avenue
City: New York
State: NY
Country: US
NORDIC TEXTILE TAKEOVER: The Cold Stitch

<field.start_date>04 Sep 2026 12:00 PM</field.start_date><field.end_date>16 Sep 2026 12:00 PM</field.end_date><field.category>Exhibit</field.category><field.organizer>Scandinavia House</field.organizer><field.name>Scandinavia House</field.name><field.email>info@amscan.org</field.email><field.phone>2127793587</field.phone><field.url>https://www.scandinaviahouse.org/event/textile-takeover-the-cold-stitch/</field.url><field.street>58 Park Avenue</field.street><field.city>New York</field.city><field.state>NY</field.state><field.country>US</field.country>
In partnership with New York Textile Month, Scandinavia House is pleased to present the third iteration of NORDIC TEXTILE TAKEOVER, an exhibition, workshop series, and symposium highlighting contemporary Nordic Textiles, coinciding with NY Textile Month in New York City.

Danish filmmaker Emilie Thalund’s debut feature shines a light on self-acceptance, friendship, desire and growing up.

“A smart, striking debut” (Leslie Felperin, The Hollywood Reporter)

Fifteen-year-old Lea is spending her summer at a health camp tucked between the forest and the sea. Her new roommate, Sasha, is everything Lea wishes she could be: bold, magnetic, and unafraid to take up space in the world. While Sasha flirts with the local boys, Lea’s gaze is fixed on Rune, the camp’s charming instructor. When Rune reciprocates her attention, something awakens within Lea; an unfamiliar yet thrilling desire.

Winner of the New Directors Competition at the San Sebastián Film Festival 2025 and the FIPRESCI Prize at this year’s Göteborg Film Festival, WEIGHTLESS has already enjoyed major festival success.
From debut director Emilie Thalund, the film presents a bold and intimate exploration of adolescent desire and identity, following 15-year-old Lea during a transformative summer, capturing the delicate balance between longing, self-discovery, and the complexities of emerging sexuality. These works push the violin to its dynamic and timbral extremes, traversing strange territories of far-flung birds, fragmented mutterings, and butterfly wingflaps. The program will conclude with a world premiere of a new work by Gersten and the Norwegian composer and double bassist Inga Margrete Aas.

Start date: 10 Sep 2026 07:30 PM
End date: 10 Sep 2026 08:30 PM
Category: Entertainment
Organizer: Scandinavia House
Name: Scandinavia House
Email: info@amscan.org
Phone: 2127793587
Url: https://www.scandinaviahouse.org/event/jennifer-gersten-concert/
Street / Address: 58 Park Avenue
City: New York
State: NY
Country: US
NORDIC TEXTILE TAKEOVER: Opening Celebration

<field.start_date>12 Sep 2026 02:00 PM</field.start_date><field.end_date>12 Sep 2026 06:00 PM</field.end_date><field.category>Exhibit</field.category><field.organizer>Scandinavia House</field.organizer><field.name>Scandinavia House</field.name><field.email>info@amscan.org</field.email><field.phone>2127793587</field.phone><field.url>https://www.scandinaviahouse.org/event/nordic-textile-takeover-opening-celebration/</field.url><field.street>58 Park Avenue</field.street><field.city>New York</field.city><field.state>NY</field.state><field.country>US</field.country>
Join us on September 12 for a program and opening reception for The Cold Stitch. Kubb and a potluck!
This is a very casual evening, a family gathering with lots of new members ... let's get (re-) acquainted.

This is a free event!
If you have a spouse, partner or immediate family who are not members, please invite them. We want them to join us too. If you have been meaning to join or re-join the Swedish Historical Society, this is your chance! So come on out!

SHS will provide the tableware and bottled water. We already have members bringing a main dish, so we think we have that covered. Think about what you would like to bring (a dish or two if you wish).

Winner of the Audience Award at the 2026 Göteborg Film Festival, The Quiet Beekeeper is a quiet and deeply affecting drama inspired by real-life events exploring love, nature, and the cycles of life.

“A warmly melancholic, affirmative slice of imperfect humanity”

Set in the small, rustic town of Åmotfors in the Swedish region of Värmland, close to the Norwegian border, the film follows father Olof and daughter Lise who long for connection and carry shared grief in different ways. Like his forefathers, beekeeper Olof (a stellar Adam Lundgren) keeps bees and drives a snowplough in wintertime to keep the bills paid for his family, consisting of his mother, sister and his prickly teenage daughter Lise.

With a delicate touch, the film deftly captures life in the countryside, portraying both the everyday and the existential, from the humming of beehives to a relationship on the verge of collapse.

Directed and co-written by Marcus Carlsson, who co-wrote the script with star Adam Lundgren, and featuring an atmospheric score by Janne Schaffer, this is a sensitive story of loss, silence, longing for closeness, hope and facing our fears.

Start date: 16 Sep 2026 07:00 PM
End date: 16 Sep 2026 09:00 PM
Category: Entertainment
Organizer: Scandinavia House
Name: Scandinavia House
Email: info@amscan.org
Phone: 2127793587
Url: https://www.scandinaviahouse.org/event/the-quiet-beekeeper-new-nordic-cinema/
Street / Address: 58 Park Avenue
City: New York
State: NY
Country: US
VIRTUAL CLASS: Simple Cinnamon Rolls

<field.start_date>17 Sep 2026 01:00 PM</field.start_date><field.end_date>17 Sep 2026 02:00 PM</field.end_date><field.category>Education</field.category><field.organizer>American Swedish Institute</field.organizer><field.url>www.asimn.org</field.url><field.city>Minneapolis</field.city><field.state>MN</field.state><field.country>US</field.country>
Gear up for baking season with some fun variations on the classic Swedish cinnamon roll!
Come watch our special screening of Kings of Kubb, a heartwarming and entertaining documentary about one of Sweden's most beloved outdoor traditions.
Following four elite competitors as they pursue victory at the U.S. National Kubb Championship in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, the film explores the passion, rivalry, and community surrounding the iconic Swedish lawn game. What begins as a competition becomes a compelling story of friendship, ambition, and the enduring connections forged through sport.
Kings of Kubb offers a fun and inspiring look at a uniquely Swedish pastime that has found a devoted following in the United States.

Prior to the screening, join us for a game of kubb outside on the front lawn of the Embassy.
Also before the screening we will have a special Q&A with filmmakers B.J. Hollars and Steve Dayton, who will travel from Wisconsin to DC to share insights into the making of the film and the remarkable community behind the game.

Gunhild Carling never took a music lesson. She grew up in a Swedish family that simply played, and she taught herself trombone, her favorite, along with trumpet, harp, bagpipes, recorder and harmonica. She has been known to play several of them at the same time.

She has performed for King Carl XVI Gustaf at both his Ruby Jubilee and his 70th birthday, and she carries Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke and Billie Holiday in everything she sings. Now based in Northern California, she brings the whole traveling circus to Mason Street for two sets.

Start date: 20 Sep 2026 04:15 PM
End date: 20 Sep 2026 09:15 PM
Category: Entertainment
Organizer: Biscuits And Blues
Url: https://www.biscuitsandblues.com
Street / Address: 401 Mason Street
City: San Francisco
State: CA
Country: US
Fika & Performance by Per Tengstrand

<field.start_date>20 Sep 2026 04:30 PM</field.start_date><field.end_date>20 Sep 2026 06:30 PM</field.end_date><field.category>Entertainment</field.category><field.organizer>American Swedish Historical Museum</field.organizer><field.url>www.americanswedish.org</field.url><field.street>1900 Pattison Ave.</field.street><field.city>Philadelphia</field.city><field.state>PA</field.state><field.country>US</field.country>
All are welcome to enjoy a fika of Swedish pastries and coffee provided by SWEA Philadelphia followed by a special piano performance by internationally renowned Swedish artist Per Tengstrand.

Like the more familiar Dala horses (dalahästar), Dala pigs (dalagrisar) have been hand-carved and painted in the Dalarna region of Sweden for generations.
During this hands-on workshop, participants will paint their own Dala pig while learning the traditional art of Dala painting.

Annika Gyllenhaal will demonstrate the painting styles and techniques using vintage Dala horses and pigs from a local collection, which will be on display throughout the workshop. Each participant will receive a hand-carved, unpainted Dala pig to decorate. You may choose to paint a traditional design or create your own interpretation.

Ingmar Bergman was one of the most influential film directors of all time, and his works have inspired a host of other filmmakers, including Woody Allen, whose reverence for Bergman is reflected in his own works. Bergman’s films evolved in several distinct stages over five decades and reverberate with psychological and philosophical themes that explore the depths of the human psyche.

This course will introduce participants to the major films of Bergman, beginning with his early productions in the 1950s and culminating half a century later. Among topics to be explored and discussed will be personal relationships, faith, identity, alienation and redemption.

All films are in Swedish, with English subtitles. Our workshop will be conducted as a series of informal sessions in which we view, learn about and discuss the works below:

September 29, Introduction: Crisis (1948)
October 6: Thirst (1948)
October 13: Smiles of a Summer Night (1955)
October 20: Hour of the Wolf (1968)
October 27: Autumn Sonata (1978)

This gathering aims to bring people together, foster new friendships, and strengthen connections within the local Nordic community.
FREE!

Hosted by Karvel Schram, an Icelandic native and former resident of Denmark, along with a group of friends, the event was created to connect people from across all the Nordic countries, celebrate shared heritage, and learn from one another’s unique traditions and experiences.

Gathering will also help engage younger generations who may not yet be actively involved in Nordic organizations and create an accessible entry point into the broader community in the Twin Cities.

Enjoy music, the lawn game kubb, and conversation in a relaxed setting in ASI’s courtyard. While anyone age 21 and older is welcome, the event is primarily focused on building community among adults in their mid-20s to mid-30s.

Start date: 01 Oct 2026 06:00 PM
End date: 01 Oct 2026 08:00 PM
Category: Social
Organizer: American Swedish Institute
Email: info@asimn.org
Phone: 612-871-4907
Url: www.asimn.org
Street / Address: 2600 Park Ave
City: Minneapolis
State: MN
Country: US
Swedish Icons in History

<field.start_date>01 Oct 2026 06:30 PM</field.start_date><field.end_date>29 Oct 2026 08:00 PM</field.end_date><field.category>Education</field.category><field.organizer>American Swedish Institute</field.organizer><field.email>info@asimn.org</field.email><field.phone>612-871-4907 </field.phone><field.url>www.asimn.org</field.url><field.street>2600 Park Avenue</field.street><field.city>Minneapolis</field.city><field.state>MN</field.state><field.country>US</field.country>
Enjoy four historic Thursday evenings in October with Jessica Karlsson, an ASI Language Instructor and Historian.

In this lecture by Scott Verchin, learn how Scandinavian art is widely considered an underrated and overlooked area of art history, particularly outside of the Nordic region. Modern art in Scandinavia reflects a distinctive balance between international innovation and deeply rooted regional identity.

We are delighted to introduce a new Club tradition: Jenny Lind Day — an annual celebration of music, history, and the remarkable legacy of one of the 19th century’s most beloved performers.

For this first celebration, guests are invited to join us for an elegant evening beginning with a glass of wine and time to gather with friends before the performance.
The evening will continue with a special concert Under the Chandelier, where the beauty and intimacy of live music will bring the spirit of Jenny Lind’s era to life.

Together, we will celebrate the artistry, generosity, and timeless influence of the woman known around the world as the “Swedish Nightingale.”

Why Jenny Lind?
Jenny Lind was more than a celebrated singer — she was a symbol of artistry, elegance, and generosity whose influence reached far beyond the concert stage.

With a voice that captivated audiences across Europe and America, Jenny Lind became one of the first true international superstars. Her performances brought people together and created a shared cultural experience that transcended borders.

Yet what made Jenny Lind truly extraordinary was not only her talent, but the way she used her success. She was known for her humility and philanthropy, dedicating much of her fortune to charitable causes and using her influence to support education, children, and communities in need.

Jenny Lind’s legacy reminds us that great artistry has the power to inspire, connect, and give back. She represented a rare combination of excellence, grace, and purpose — qualities that continue to resonate today.

Start date: 06 Oct 2026 06:00 PM
End date: 06 Oct 2026 09:00 PM
Category: Entertainment
Organizer: The Swedish Club
Phone: 206.283.1090
Url: www.swedishclubnw.org
Street / Address: 1920 Dexter Ave
City: Seattle
State: WA
Country: US
Moomin Story Time: Bilingual

<field.start_date>07 Oct 2026 10:00 AM</field.start_date><field.end_date>07 Oct 2026 11:00 AM</field.end_date><field.category>Family</field.category><field.organizer>Nordia House</field.organizer><field.url>www.nordicnorthwest.org</field.url><field.street>8800 SW Oleson Rd.</field.street><field.city>Portland</field.city><field.state>OR</field.state><field.country>US</field.country>
Join us for a delightful bilingual story time experience in both English and Finnish, perfect for families and young readers alike.

The day begins at 10:00am with live holiday music downtown. Folkdancers, live Scandinavian music, and a processional of girls in white carrying candles and stjärngosse (star boys) lead the crowd to the Bethany Lutheran Church where the annual St. Lucia is honored with a crown of candles. Stay awhile and enjoy ginger cookies served by Lucia herself.
