Step into a world where Swedish meatballs meet pop music, where streamlined design and functional minimalism redefined modern living, and where Nordic ingenuity brought about life-saving innovations.

From Taste to Tech explores the ways in which Nordic craftspeople, artists, chefs, and thinkers brought their values and visions to American soil: building churches, skyscrapers, and bridges in the 1930s, revolutionizing childhood with playful yet purposeful Lego toys, and transforming entertainment through cinematic storytelling and best-selling games like Minecraft, Angry Birds, and Candy Crush. From quintessentially Swedish brands you never knew had Nordic origins - like the implantable pacemaker or pizza rolls - there’s something for everyone in From Taste to Tech!

The exhibition features a remarkable collection of artifacts from World War II, original art for the film Pinocchio by Gustaf Tenggren, sandals worn by Greta Garbo, vintage SAAB parts and mid-century modern furniture.

Charting the gradual evolution of a family in the midst of an irreparable fracture, The Love That Remains is a poignant, crisply pointillistic domestic drama that observes life’s changes with humor and whimsy, set against the majestic, ever-shifting Icelandic landscape. Visual artist Anna (Saga Garðarsdóttir) and fisherman Magnús (Sverrir Guðnason) were teenage sweethearts but have recently grown apart, and Magnús has moved out of the house. As long as the newly estranged parents put on a good face, the children—and their adorable sheepdog Panda (who won the prestigious Palme Dog award at Cannes)—seem to take the split in stride. Yet as Magnús becomes increasingly alienated from his domestic life, harsh reality can’t help but bubble to the surface.

Hlynur Pálmason’s follow-up to his austere 19th-century drama Godland is a “constantly surprising” film with an immaculate sense of framing and pacing—and an evocative, dulcet piano score by Harry Hunt—dotted with idiosyncratic flights of fancy that never detract from the central emotional authenticity.

Start date: 03 Jun 2026 07:00 PM
End date: 03 Jun 2026 09:00 PM
Category: Entertainment
Organizer: Scandinavia House
Name: Scandinavia House
Email: info@amscan.org
Phone: 212.779.3587
Url: https://www.scandinaviahouse.org/event/the-love-that-remains-new-nordic-cinema/
Street / Address: 58 Park Avenue
City: New York
State: NY
Country: US
Chi Westfelt | Nordic Summer Jazz

<field.start_date>04 Jun 2026 07:00 PM</field.start_date><field.end_date>04 Jun 2026 09:00 PM</field.end_date><field.category>Entertainment</field.category><field.organizer>Scandinavia House</field.organizer><field.name>Scandinavia House</field.name><field.email>info@amscan.org</field.email><field.phone>212.779.3587</field.phone><field.url>https://www.scandinaviahouse.org/event/chi-westfelt/</field.url><field.street>58 Park Avenue</field.street><field.city>New York</field.city><field.state>NY</field.state><field.country>US</field.country>
Our popular Nordic Summer Jazz Series returns to Scandinavia House, with performances from some of Scandinavia’s most talented jazz musicians, composers, and singers in Victor Borge Hall!

As the stakes rise on the pitch, real-world pressures beyond it reveal a powerful story of legacy, rivalry, and the fragile line between friendship and ambition. What does it cost to be the best? And how high a price will one pay to be crowned the King of Kubb?"

See "Kings of Kubb," featuring a personalized recorded introduction from directors Steve Dayton and B.J. Hollars. If you're already a kubb pro, we know you'll want to see this exciting documentary and join us for some games of kubb (also called "viking chess") on the lawn afterward!

If you're wondering what kubb is, come find out! The Swedish lawn game has taken hold over the city of Eau Claire, Wisconsin--with a population of just 70,000, it hosts the largest weekly kubb league in the world and hosts the U.S. National Kubb Championship.
Filmmakers Dayton and Hollars illuminate the formation of the U.S. National Kubb Championship and what the sport means to its players, four in particular who are vying for the championship.

"It’s not quite bowling. It’s not quite bags. And it’s far more than “throwing sticks at blocks.” When the Nordic lawn game arrived in the United States, American players quickly discovered that even with skill, strategy, and mental toughness, kubb can break your heart … or heal it.

In this event with AO Glass, Björk Cafe & Bistro and BonBon Candy, participants will learn the history behind the design work inspired by “The Swedish Nightingale,” one of the most famous opera singers of the 19th century. The event will be accompanied by Swedish drinks, snacks and treats from Björk and BonBon.

All ticketholders will receive their own AO Glass bowl (retail $45), with a special engraving marking the day!

When Rich Arentzen & Tove Ohlander at AO Glass purchased their giant hydraulic press from Fenton Glass Factory in West Virginia, they were given an old metal mold to practice their technique of pressed glass. Unknowingly, they had stumbled across a piece of Swedish-American operatic history—after discovering the opera singer’s name etched onto the mold, they discovered that it had been created in the 1940s in her audience. Since then, they went on to launch their own line of glass bowls designed on the historic mold.

This event will share the history and design work behind creating the bowls, bringing together glass, food, music, history, and Swedish culture. It will also honor the significance of this year’s Swedish National Day, as Sweden celebrates 250 years of American independence and the deep, enduring ties between Sweden and the United States—including those of the famed “Swedish Nightingale,” whose 1850-52 tour of America launched her worldwide fame while introducing Nordic music traditions to the U.S. and shaping the future of American entertainment.

Treats will include food and drinks from Björk and treats from BonBon—New York’s own Swedish candy maker, who will introduce two new Moomin candy variations! The event will also highlight how Swedish candy and Swedish glass are part of the same larger story: traditions that continue to evolve, travel, and find new audiences.

Start date: 06 Jun 2026 03:00 PM
End date: 06 Jun 2026 05:00 PM
Category: Celebration
Organizer: Scandinavia House
Name: Scandinavia House
Email: info@amscan.org
Phone: 212.779.3587
Url: https://www.scandinaviahouse.org/event/the-jenny-lind-bowl/
Street / Address: 58 Park Avenue
City: New York
State: NY
Country: US
Le Club du Sauna

<field.start_date>06 Jun 2026 09:00 PM</field.start_date><field.end_date>06 Jun 2026 11:00 PM</field.end_date><field.category>Entertainment</field.category><field.organizer>Scandinavian Club</field.organizer><field.name>Peter</field.name><field.email>news@thescandinavianclub.com</field.email><field.phone>2035125229</field.phone><field.url>https://thescandinavianclub.com/le-club-du-sauna/</field.url><field.street>1351 S Pine Creek Rd</field.street><field.city>Fairfield</field.city><field.state>CT</field.state><field.country>US</field.country>
Inspired by the whimsy of “Le Club du Sauna,” you are invited to a modern-era speakeasy where the spirit of the 1952 Olympics is alive, well, and very much undercover.

Le Club du Sauna opened during the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki and often cited as potentially the first true nightclub in Finland. It was run by theater director Vivica Bandler with close friend and former lover of Bandler, artist Tove Jansson (of Moomin fame) was one of the key contributors to the club’s unique atmosphere and design.

Start date: 06 Jun 2026 09:00 PM
End date: 06 Jun 2026 11:00 PM
Category: Entertainment
Organizer: Scandinavian Club
Name: Peter
Email: news@thescandinavianclub.com
Phone: 2035125229
Url: https://thescandinavianclub.com/le-club-du-sauna/
Street / Address: 1351 S Pine Creek Rd
City: Fairfield
State: CT
Country: US
Worship Service

<field.start_date>07 Jun 2026 10:00 AM</field.start_date><field.end_date>07 Jun 2026 11:30 AM</field.end_date><field.category>Celebration</field.category><field.organizer>Upsala Presbyterian Church</field.organizer><field.name>Debbie Gunther</field.name><field.email>admin@upsalapresbyterian.com</field.email><field.phone>(407) 330-2635</field.phone><field.url>https://www.upsalapresbyterian.com/</field.url><field.street>101 Upsala Rd</field.street><field.city>Sanford</field.city><field.state>NY</field.state><field.country>US</field.country>
Swedish Heritage Celebration and special worship service.

Start date: 07 Jun 2026 10:00 AM
End date: 07 Jun 2026 11:30 AM
Category: Celebration
Organizer: Upsala Presbyterian Church
Name: Debbie Gunther
Email: admin@upsalapresbyterian.com
Phone: (407) 330-2635
Url: https://www.upsalapresbyterian.com/
Street / Address: 101 Upsala Rd
City: Sanford
State: NY
Country: US
Sofia Talvik: Concerts In The Park

<field.start_date>08 Jun 2026 07:30 PM</field.start_date><field.end_date>08 Jun 2026 08:30 PM</field.end_date><field.category>Entertainment</field.category><field.organizer>Sofia Talvik</field.organizer><field.url>www.sofiatalvik.com </field.url><field.street>Vernon Worthen Park, 300 South 400 East St. </field.street><field.city>George</field.city><field.state>UT</field.state><field.country>US</field.country>
Swedish singer-songwriter Sofia Talvik returns to the U.S. with her Songs, Strings & Stories Tour 2026.

Nordic Book Club meets monthly via Zoom to discuss contemporary literature in translation. On June 9, 2026, we’ll be discussing Beasts of the Sea by Iida Turpeinen.

“Turpeinen matches the heights of Andrea Barrett” in this sweeping and intimate tale about a fateful encounter between man and nature spanning three centuries and linked by a long-extinct denizen of the northern oceans (Publishers Weekly starred review).

In 1741, thirty-two-year-old naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller joins Captain Bering’s Great Northern Expedition to scout out a sea route from Asia to America. Plagued with hardships, captain and crew never reach their goal, but they do make a unique discovery, a gentle giant that will be named for the young explorer who described it: Steller’s sea cow. In 1859, the governor of the Russian territory of Alaska sends his men to recover the skeleton of the massive marine mammal rumored to have vanished a hundred years before. Two years later, a revered Helsinki professor hires a talented illustrator—a woman!—to make precise drawings of a set of bones sent from afar.

The ill-fated beast will help introduce to a skeptical public the concept of human-caused extinction. Finally, in 1952, the Museum of Zoology assigns its most talented restorer the task of refurbishing the antique skeleton, a testimony to the sea cow’s fate that will fire the imaginations of future generations.

A breathtaking literary achievement and an adventure that crosses continents and centuries, Beasts of the Sea is a tale of grand ambition, the quest for knowledge, and the urge to resurrect what humankind has, in its ignorance, destroyed.

Beasts of the Sea is available in paperback and e-book from Hachette Book Group and from Bookshop.org and other retailers.

Start date: 09 Jun 2026 06:00 PM
End date: 09 Jun 2026 07:00 PM
Category: Education
Organizer: Scandinavia House
Name: Scandinavia House
Email: info@amscan.org
Phone: 212.779.3587
Url: https://www.scandinaviahouse.org/event/nordic-book-club-online-beasts-of-the-sea/
Street / Address: 58 Park Avenue
City: New York
State: NY
Country: US
Ole Mathisen | Nordic Summer Jazz

<field.start_date>09 Jun 2026 07:00 PM</field.start_date><field.end_date>09 Jun 2026 08:00 PM</field.end_date><field.category>Entertainment</field.category><field.organizer>Scandinavia House</field.organizer><field.name>Scandinavia House</field.name><field.email>info@amscan.org</field.email><field.phone>212.779.3587</field.phone><field.url>https://www.scandinaviahouse.org/event/ole-mathisen-nordic-summer-jazz/</field.url><field.street>58 Park Avenue</field.street><field.city>New York</field.city><field.state>NY</field.state><field.country>US</field.country>
Our popular Nordic Summer Jazz Series returns to Scandinavia House, with performances from some of Scandinavia’s most talented jazz musicians, composers, and singers in Victor Borge Hall!

As we continue to grow this event, our goal is to make Midsummer a signature Swedish‑American moment in the nation’s capital—one that brings people together across backgrounds and perspectives, setting aside politics and differences to celebrate culture, community, and shared joy.

This year’s celebration also takes place as the United States marks its 250th anniversary, honoring our long-shared history that stretches back nearly four centuries, when the early settlers of New Sweden came to the Delaware river. Midsummer offers a joyful opportunity to celebrate these enduring ties and the close friendship between Sweden and the United States.

Last year, nearly 4,000 people—families, students, Washingtonians, and visitors from across the region—joined us on the lawn of the Sylvan Theater for an evening of dancing, music, and cultural exchange.

This year’s celebration builds on that energy with a lively program featuring classic Midsummer traditions such as flower wreath making, dancing around the Midsummer pole, and live performances, including a live DJ playing high-energy dance tunes. More details to come soon!

Bring your friends, your family, a flower wreath, a picnic blanket, and whatever food your heart desires—everyone is welcome to this free and festive celebration.

We look forward to welcoming you for an evening of summer light, culture, and community on the National Mall!

This Slow Flow class is a gently-paced vinyasa practice that invites you to move, breathe, and settle into your body — no experience necessary, all levels welcome.

Slow Flow sits in the sweet spot between active and easeful, blending softness with strength. Expect a continuous, fluid sequence of standing and seated poses, linked with breath and held just long enough to find your foundation and fully arrive in each shape. This is a mindful, accessible flow designed to move with intention rather than speed. We’ll close every session with a generous savasana so you leave feeling grounded and renewed.

Whether you’ve never stepped on a mat or you’ve been practicing for years, this class is designed to meet you exactly where you are.
Join Kate Holter, founder and owner of Flood Yoga, for three Sunday mornings this summer. We will be using the beautiful Osberg Great Hall and the Fisherman's Sun Terrace for an indoor/outdoor yoga experience.

Please bring:
A yoga mat
Water bottle
Blanket/towel or other personal props for extra support (if desired)

ASI’s Midsommar Celebration welcomes everyone to observe one of Sweden’s favorite holidays by heading outside to enjoy live music, dancing around the majstång (maypole), and many family-friendly activities.

Whether you’re an ASI regular or curious to check out this Swedish holiday, all ages will find a campus ready to welcome summer with traditional foods, music, and dancing.
Make your own fresh flower head wreath, try out Midsommar specialties like Swedish strawberry cake, and meet artists at the pop-up market.
Or sit back and enjoy festive music from ASI’s affiliated music ensembles and special guests Lynx Lynx.

Please note this is one of ASI’s busiest days of the year, so tickets are sold in timed-entry slots before 1:30 p.m. Tickets at the door are available for $21 for all adults and free for youth under 18 after 1:30 pm. Each ticket includes admission to the Turnblad Mansion and the brand-new exhibition, Eyes as Big as Plates; make-and-take crafts; and access to all performances and pop-up activities. Head wreath kits and a special festival menu from FIKA Café are available for purchase throughout the day. The day begins at 10:00am with live holiday music downtown. Folkdancers, live Scandinavian music, and a processional of girls in white carrying candles and stjärngosse (star boys) lead the crowd to the Bethany Lutheran Church where the annual St. Lucia is honored with a crown of candles. Stay awhile and enjoy ginger cookies served by Lucia herself.
