The exhibition features a remarkable collection of artifacts from World War II, original art for the film Pinocchio by Gustaf Tenggren, sandals worn by Greta Garbo, vintage SAAB parts and mid-century modern furniture. A Century in the Making: 100 Years of ASHM

Discover how a century of change has shaped ASHM into the Museum you know today. The special Museum-wide exhibition A Century in the Making: 100 Years of ASHM invites visitors to journey through time and see how the American Swedish Historical Museum has evolved with a dynamic blend of past and present through rarely seen artifacts, captivating photographs, and personal stories. The exhibition includes original oil paintings of the 1926 Sesquicentennial Exposition on loan from the Atwater Kent Collection at Drexel University. This once-in-a-century exhibit looks to the past, honors, the present, and invites visitors to imagine ASHM's next 100 years. A Century in the Making: 100 Years of ASHM will be on view throughout the Museum galleries and around the Museums balcony space from May 10, 2026 to January 10, 2027. Admission is included with ASHM general tickets. ASHM is open Tuesday through Sunday 10:00 am 4:00 pm. The exhibit is made possible by grants from the Philadelphia Funders Collaborative for the Semiquincentennial and SWEA New Jersey. Funding for the American Swedish Historical Museum is supported by grants from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the Philadelphia Cultural Fund, the ASHM Auxiliary, Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation, Midsommarklubben, Red Moose Charitable Trust, and an anonymous foundation.

Discover the beauty of rosemaling with our popular painting class! Enhance your design skills by exploring the rich tradition of Norwegian folk art. This class covers a variety of regional styles, including Telemark, Hallingdal, and Gudbrandsdal. Students will have the opportunity to paint on both decorative and practical objects with guidance by Marilyn Hansen. The Love That Remains

On June 3, see Icelandic director Hlynur Pálmasons tender, quirky family drama The Love That Remains! Charting the gradual evolution of a family in the midst of an irreparable fracture, The Love That Remains is a poignant, crisply pointillistic domestic drama that observes lifes changes with humor and whimsy, set against the majestic, ever-shifting Icelandic landscape. Visual artist Anna (Saga Garðarsdóttir) and fisherman Magnús (Sverrir Guðnason) were teenage sweethearts but have recently grown apart, and Magnús has moved out of the house. As long as the newly estranged parents put on a good face, the childrenand their adorable sheepdog Panda (who won the prestigious Palme Dog award at Cannes)seem to take the split in stride. Yet as Magnús becomes increasingly alienated from his domestic life, harsh reality cant help but bubble to the surface. The Jenny Lind Bowl, Swedish National Day celebration

Celebrate Swedish National Day with us on June 6 with a tasting, design and learning event based on the legendary Jenny Lind bowl! In this event with AO Glass, Björk Cafe & Bistro and BonBon Candy, participants will learn the history behind the design work inspired by The Swedish Nightingale, one of the most famous opera singers of the 19th century. The event will be accompanied by Swedish drinks, snacks and treats from Björk and BonBon. All ticketholders will receive their own AO Glass bowl (retail $45), with a special engraving marking the day! When Rich Arentzen & Tove Ohlander at AO Glass purchased their giant hydraulic press from Fenton Glass Factory in West Virginia, they were given an old metal mold to practice their technique of pressed glass. Unknowingly, they had stumbled across a piece of Swedish-American operatic historyafter discovering the opera singers name etched onto the mold, they discovered that it had been created in the 1940s in her audience. Since then, they went on to launch their own line of glass bowls designed on the historic mold. This event will share the history and design work behind creating the bowls, bringing together glass, food, music, history, and Swedish culture. It will also honor the significance of this years Swedish National Day, as Sweden celebrates 250 years of American independence and the deep, enduring ties between Sweden and the United Statesincluding those of the famed Swedish Nightingale, whose 1850-52 tour of America launched her worldwide fame while introducing Nordic music traditions to the U.S. and shaping the future of American entertainment. Treats will include food and drinks from Björk and treats from BonBonNew Yorks own Swedish candy maker, who will introduce two new Moomin candy variations! The event will also highlight how Swedish candy and Swedish glass are part of the same larger story: traditions that continue to evolve, travel, and find new audiences.

Inspired by the whimsy of Le Club du Sauna, you are invited to a modern-era speakeasy where the spirit of the 1952 Olympics is alive, well, and very much undercover. The Music: Stephane Wrembel and a quartet of special guests play Django Reinhardt gypsy jazz. The Vibe: The Main Hall, reimagined as bohemian Helsinki. The Pour: Icy, crisp, and expertly crafted. The Aesthetic: Vintage couture highly encouraged. He composed and performed the original instrumental track Bistro Fada which was the theme song for Woody Allens 2011 film Midnight in Paris. It introduced Wrembels acoustic guitar work to a wider audience and became his most widely known composition. Le Club du Sauna opened during the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki and often cited as potentially the first true nightclub in Finland. It was run by theater director Vivica Bandler with close friend and former lover of Bandler, artist Tove Jansson (of Moomin fame) was one of the key contributors to the clubs unique atmosphere and design.

Nordic Book Club Online | Beasts of the Sea

Read and discuss literature with our Nordic Book Club Online! Nordic Book Club meets monthly via Zoom to discuss contemporary literature in translation. On June 9, 2026, well be discussing Beasts of the Sea by Iida Turpeinen. Gallery Tours | Inside Voices Outside Light

On view from April 18 to June 20th, 2026 at Scandinavia House, Inside Voices, Outside Light is a group exhibition featuring 21 contemporary artists from the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, and Norway. The show highlights the unique perspective of these North Atlantic territories, who share cultural and historic ties while each possessing distinct identities and communities. With works ranging across photography, paintings, textiles, film, and sculpture, including three site-specific installations, the exhibition also showcases the diversity and complexity of the region. In these guided tours, led by Emily Stoddart, ASFs Manager of Exhibitions and Community Programs, and the curator of the exhibition, and Eve OShea, ASFs Exhibitions and Cultural Programs Assistant, learn about the artists in this exhibition and their work. Celebrate the longest day of the year, Swedish style! ASIs Midsommar Celebration welcomes everyone to observe one of Swedens favorite holidays by heading outside to enjoy live music, dancing around the majstång (maypole), and many family-friendly activities. Whether youre an ASI regular or curious to check out this Swedish holiday, all ages will find a campus ready to welcome summer with traditional foods, music, and dancing. Make your own fresh flower head wreath, try out Midsommar specialties like Swedish strawberry cake, and meet artists at the pop-up market. Or sit back and enjoy festive music from ASIs affiliated music ensembles and special guests Lynx Lynx. Please note this is one of ASIs busiest days of the year, so tickets are sold in timed-entry slots before 1:30 p.m. Tickets at the door are available for $21 for all adults and free for youth under 18 after 1:30 pm. Each ticket includes admission to the Turnblad Mansion and the brand-new exhibition, Eyes as Big as Plates; make-and-take crafts; and access to all performances and pop-up activities. Head wreath kits and a special festival menu from FIKA Café are available for purchase throughout the day. This event runs rain or shine, so please dress for the weather.

19th U.S. National Kubb Championship

The U.S. National Kubb Championship started in 2007 with 15 teams and 35 players. The U.S National Kubb Championship is the oldest and largest kubb tournament outside Europe and one of the three largest in the world. In 2024, we set a World Record for the largest 3+ person kubb tournament, with 144 teams, and matched it in 2025. This year, registration filled up in only 15 hours. A favorite Swedish holiday tradition, also observed in Lindsborg, is St. Lucia Festival celebrating the figure that is the emblem of light on a long winter day. The day begins at 10:00am with live holiday music downtown. Folkdancers, live Scandinavian music, and a processional of girls in white carrying candles and stjärngosse (star boys) lead the crowd to the Bethany Lutheran Church where the annual St. Lucia is honored with a crown of candles.
