Orthofer, a free event with book signing at Scandinavia House.

In The Glitter Scene teenage Johanna lives with her aunt Solveig in a small house bordering the forest on the outskirts of a remote coastal town in Finland. She leads a lonely existence that is punctuated by visits to her privileged classmate, Ulla Bäckström, who lives in the nearby luxury gated community. It isn’t until Ulla tells her the local lore about the American girl and the tragedy that took place more than thirty years before that Johanna begins to question how her parents fit into the story. She sets out to unravel her family history, the identity of her mother, and the dark secrets long buried with her father. In the process of opening closed doors, others in the community reflect back on the town’s history, on their youth, and on the dreams that play in their minds. Soon a new story emerges, that stirs up Johanna’s greatest fears, but ultimately leads to the answers she is searching for. The Glitter Scene is a riveting mystery that explores the roles of truth and myth, reality and fiction, and the repercussions of family secrets.

About the author:
Monika Fagerholm’s much-praised first novel, Wonderful Women by the Sea, became one of the most widely translated Scandinavian literary novels in the mid-nineties and was nominated for the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. In 1998 it was followed by the cult novel Diva, which won the Swedish Literature Society Award. Her third novel, The American Girl, became a number-one best seller and won the premier literary award in Sweden, the August Prize, as well as the Aniara Prize and the Gothenburg Post Award.

Opening reception: Thursday evening, February 16, 2012.

About the Artist

With a sultry and sharp-edged sense of aesthetics, Mikael Altersten creates a vividly contemporary dialog in paint. Smoldering male and female figures hint at an inner passion hidden beneath the surface, partially obscured behind a thick, carefully constructed haze of pigment. Working in acrylic and collage on canvas with a square format, Altersten’s creations are bold and graphically arresting, combining sensually posed figures, enigmatic text, and color saturated grids and forms. The artist strives to keep his works creatively his own, and so his collaged photos are taken only by himself or specially commissioned to be shot by other professional photographers. As he passionately searches for the soul of art, Altersten concentrates on creating works which bridge cultural boundaries while remaining true to his own personal visual language of spiritual and sensual mystique.
A former apprentice of Swedish artist Hans-Göran Eriksson, Mikael Altersten currently lives in Stockholm, Sweden. He exhibits widely throughout Europe and now in the United States.

The American-Scandinavian Foundation’s third and final centennial exhibition, Luminous Modernism: Scandinavian Art Comes to America, 1912 will culminate in a major, all-day symposium in February 2012. The program, Regional Modernism: New Art in Scandinavia, 1880-1912, will offer audiences an in-depth look at the art, history, and cultural relations of the Scandinavian countries during the dynamic decades of the early 20th century.

The symposium will comprise morning and afternoon sessions, each of which will open with a keynote address and move on to a series of lectures. Presenters will explore the ways in which the distinct, regional modernism of the Nordic countries communicated with the rest of continental Europe at the turn-of-the-century and how it came to influence North America’s own modern artists following their exposure to the 1912 Exhibition of Scandinavian Art. The engaging program will present expert insight on the careers of well-known early modern masters including Anders Zorn, Edvard Munch, and Vilhelm Hammershøi, as well as advanced research on the ways in which Scandinavian modernism relates to the work of North American artists such as Marsden Hartley, Canada’s Group of Seven, and the notorious Stieglitz Circle. It will also engage related topics including the history of taste in the United States, women artists in Scandinavia, changes in ethnic identity, and questions on the origins of modernism.

The impressive roster of participating speakers includes independent scholars, museum directors, curators, and art history professors from both Scandinavia and the United States.

Swedish pianist Per Tengstrand performs a series of concerts with distinguished guest musicians highlighting the repertoire of Scandinavian chamber music and its composers.

Considered by many the pianist of all pianists, Liszt was 32 years Edvard Grieg's senior – Grieg was still a student in Leipzig when he first heard the composer play. At first rather cool in his impressions of the piano master, Grieg came to admire Liszt greatly. Overtime Liszt became a mentor to Grieg, giving the young Norwegian recognition, encouragement, and support.

In the year that marks the 200th anniversary of Franz Liszt’s birth, Per Tengstrand will play two masterpieces by each composer: Grieg's most serious piano work, Ballade in G minor, Op. 24, and Liszt's Sonata in B-minor, one of the greatest solo works of the Romantic era.

This series is made possible in part by a generous grant from The Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation.

The year 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of the Nordic Council Literature Prize, the highest honor awarded for a work of fiction produced in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden as well as Greenland, the Faroe Islands, Åland Islands, and Sami language areas. A beacon of cooperation between the Nordic countries, the prize is awarded annually to a novel, play or collection of poetry, short stories or essays that meets high literary and artistic standards. The exhibition profiles prize winners of the past 50 years—including Tomas Tranströmer, Per Petterson, Naja Marie Aidt, Sjón, Jan Kjærstad, and Sofi Oksanen—accompanied by editions of their work.

This spring presents a continuation of a series of panel discussions begun in early 2011 that emphasize the influence of Nordic literature. American authors, dramatists, critics, and their guests discuss giants of Nordic literature. Rooted in dramatic readings, reflections, and lively discussion, these literary evenings allow readers of today a new window into the lives and characters behind the work of a spectrum of Nordic literary geniuses.
A book event with translator 2004 ASF Translation Prize Winner Paul Norlen and Former ASF Fellow and Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Jennifer Watson celebrate Selma Lagerlöf and her 1891 romantic novel, The Saga of Gösta Berling, the Swedish Gone with the Wind. Danish Minister for Nordic Co-operation and Minister for Gender Equality Manu Sireen will provide introductory remarks.
Presented in association with the Consulate General of Sweden in New York and The American-Scandinavian Society of New York.

Dorrit Matson, Music Director and Conductor, leads the New York Scandia Symphony in a concert of masterpieces by Danish composer Anders Koppel, Swedish Baroque composer Johan Helmrich Roman, Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg, and Finnish composer Bernhardt Crusell. Featured soloists include Mayuki Fukuhara, violin and Steven D. Hartman, clarinet.

For over twenty years the New York Scandia Symphony has delighted New York City listeners with its warm and vibrant tone, a lovely clarity of expressive detail as well as interesting and exciting programs. It has a valuable mission to present imaginative and creative programs of music by Classical, Romantic and Contemporary Scandinavian composers, introducing previously unknown and seldom performed compositions to American audiences. With up to 90% of its repertoire presented as U.S. premieres, the orchestra revives and preserves the works of Scandinavian composers that might not otherwise have been brought to the attention of the public.
