"Longing for Falköping" an exhibition of paintings by Sue Carlson
"I am a second generation Swedish American. My grandfather was born in Falköping in 1887," says the artist. "I grew up in Minnesota, amidst the sounds, sights and impressions of Swedish culture. Most of my Swedish speaking relatives in Minnesota died before I was born, leaving the rest of us with words, phrases and stories; stories of waterfalls, lakes, oceans, ice and snow, old churches and diaries, forests and runestones. Poverty forced my family out of Sweden; they became successful farmers, doctors and businessmen in the USA. But I often wonder, if he had the chance, would my grandfather return to Falköping?"
And about her art: "My paintings are non-referential (they don't refer to anything) and non-representational (they don't represent anything). They resemble landscape, because of their color and horizon-like bands and lines. They often resemble the land I long for in my imagination, my grandfather's Falköping."
Sue Carlson's paintings wil be on display until April 10. More information on the New York based artist and her work at the Church website.
