THE SWEDISH WARSHIP VASA
Thursday, May 6, 7 p.m.
The Vasa was a warship built for Sweden’s King Gustavus Adolphus. Construction of the ship began in 1626 and was completed in 1628. Its maiden voyage on August 10, 1628, lasted only about two hours—the ship capsized and sank outside the Stockholm harbor after traveling less than one nautical mile. On Thursday, May 6, we will hear why the ship was built, how it sank, and who got blamed for the accident. We will also learn about the failed rescue mission in 1628 and the successful one in 1961, and what is being done to preserve the Vasa today.
The presenters are: Bob Gramen, Board member, Swedish American Museum, and
Stephen Anderson, Board member, Swedish American Museum and Swedish-American Historical Society.
Cost: $15 per person. Refreshments will be served. Reservations are recommended.
