Per Harling, Bethany College’s 2010-2011 Pearson Distinguished Professor of Swedish Studies, will give his first public address on “The Hymns of Lina Sandell” and lead a hymn sing in Presser Hall. Sandell, a Swedish composer, wrote many popular songs including "Children of the Heavenly Father" (Tryggare kan ingen vara), "Thy Holy Wings" (Bred dina vida vingar) and "Day by Day" (Blott en dag) as well as many more hymns that have been translated into English. Harling has authored a book about Sandell, who was born Karolina Wilhelmina Sandell in a rectory at Fröderyd, Småland, Sweden (1832-1903)
Sandell wrote hymns and poured out her broken heart in an endless stream of beautiful songs. Anyone growing up in Sweden will rejoice when they hear these hymns, which are very much part of the Swedish cultural treasure chest.
