In 2013 a group of Swedish and Norwegian musicians began collaborating under the name Ljom to collect and preserve original and unique mountain melodies from the area of Snåsa, Norway. Part of their music includes “kauk,” which means to shout or make loud noises. It’s an old and somewhat local term for a cow call in this rural mountainous area. The cow calls were used on small farms for calling farm animals, but also played a role in letting neighbors know they were coming to visit. Eventually the tradition became obsolete, but with the mountain farming renaissance taking place, kauk is slowly coming back.
Join us at the Swedish American Museum as Ljom brings the sounds of the mountain farms to our gallery on Monday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m.
There is a suggested $10 donation for admission to the concert. Reservations are appreciated and can be made via email to museum@samac.org
