Icons: An Exhibition about the Right to Exist

Ikoner (Icons) is an exhibition about the right to exist, featuring portraits of famous icons and archetypes we can all relate to. The pictures show universal dreams and the desire to be part of popular culture, art or society. However, our icons are depicted by a group who have rarely, if ever, been allowed to stand out, despite always being among us. These 21 models from all over Sweden have much in common: dreams, feelings and Down syndrome.
This exhibit is about more than photography. It’s about the right to exist and stand out, whoever you are. All our qualities make society more colorful. We’re all unique, but not as unique as we think.
Created by Glada Hudik Theater in collaboration with Fotografiska, the Museum of Photography in Stockholm.
On exhibit at SAM through July 6.
