Fat Tuesday in Sweden is celebrated by eating a delicious treat called a semla. These yummy marzipan filled buns topped with whipped cream have to be eaten to be believed, so come by our pop-up café and indulge before the fasting starts!
What are semlor exactly? The oldest version of the semla was a plain bread bun, eaten in a bowl of warm milk. In Swedish this is known as hetvägg. Today, the Swedish semla consists of a cardamom-spiced wheat bun that has its top cut off and is filled with a mix of milk or cream and almond paste. It is topped with whipped cream and the cut-off top, which serves as a lid and is dusted with powdered sugar. Today it is often eaten on its own though some people still eat it in a bowl of hot milk as the original hetvägg was served.
