Kiruna - The Giant Move. A seminar on moving 23,196 people in one fell swoop.

A city above. A mine below. An earth caving in. Something had to be done. Who could imagine that one of the world's most spectacular happenings would occur in Sweden? For the first time in history an entire town is being moved two miles. Kiruna is home to one of the world's largest underground iron ore mines, which is the city's main source of income and employment. The iron mine beneath the city is making the ground collapse, leaving the town facing a dilemma: move brick by brick or be swallowed by the mine. Kiruna has now begun one of the boldest, most radical urban projects of this century.

Listen to one story told from two perspectives: representatives from Kiruna Municipality and White Arkitekter AB, the architecture firm building the new city, will share their story about the giant move.

Featured Speakers:

Niklas Sirén, First Vice President, Kiruna municipality
Monica von Schmalensee, CEO, White Arkitekter AB
Michael Stenqvist, Lead Architect, White Arkitekter AB
Krister Lindstedt, Architecht SAR/MSA, White Arkitekter AB

Speaker Luncheon featuring Lars-Eric Aaro, President & CEO, LKAB

Topic: Sustainable Growth in the Arctic

Lars-Eric Aaro is the President & CEO of LKAB, world leading producer of processed iron ore products for steelmaking, and a growing supplier of mineral products for other industrial sectors. Mr. Aaro started his professional career as a Mining Engineer at LKAB before joining Outokumpu Mining as a Mining Superintendent followed by a position as General Manager for the lead and zinc-division at Boliden AB. Mr. Aaro later returned to LKAB where he held several positions before being appointed President & CEO in 2010.

Founded in 1890, LKAB is one of Swedens oldest industrial companies. LKAB mines magnetite ore in some of the world's richest iron ore deposits north of the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lappland. LKAB operates an iron ore mine underneath the Arctic town of Kiruna. The mine beneath the city is causing the formation of fissures, which is why parts of the city are being moved two miles to the east, allowing economically important mining to continue.

Sustainability is part of LKABs DNA and in the core of their business model. Their aim is to create prosperity and growth by being the world's most innovative and sustainable mining company.

Join us and be inspired by a unique urban transformation.
