Swedish jazz musician Elsa Nilsson curates music with women in jazz, in a meeting place for like minded musicians - in the fun and relaxed setting of Max Cellar. Nilsson feels this fills a need that isn't being met in the jazz community, where women often feel they have to toughen themselves up in order to be taken seriously. This event is part of a series intended to build a community as well as showcase music written and/or performed by women in the New York Jazz community.
This event includes Elsa Nilsson Quartet at 8 p.m., Caroline Davis at 9 p.m. and Marta Sanchez with Snackasaurus Flex at 10 p.m.
Elsa Nilsson Quartet: Swedish-born flute player Elsa Nilsson's music is profoundly playful and widely influenced. Nilsson has built her solid career upon her belief that all folk music (including jazz) has a common thread, and that by weaving those threads together, a deeper, more complete understanding among varying cultures can be reached.
