In this talk, Dr. Jane L. Florine, professor of ethnomusicology/musicology at Chicago State University, will discuss past Swedish immigration to Argentina and its cultural legacy there. She will focus on the two main areas of that country where Swedes and other Scandinavians settled (greater Buenos Aires and the northeastern Province of Misiones) by giving a PowerPoint presentation largely consisting of photographs and informal commentary. The talk will include historical information about Swedish immigration and settlement in Argentina—the late 19th and early 20th centuries in particular; a description of the Nordic community in Buenos Aires from 1975 to 1987, when Florine used to perform on flute at the local Swedish Church; and the findings of her recent ethnographic fieldwork carried out with Swedish folk music, dance and culture in both Buenos Aires and northeast Argentina at Oberá’s National Immigrant Festival.
