The world of runes is one of wonders. Runic inscriptions are the only original sources from the Viking world. On runestones we meet the messages of the Vikings themselves, and this lecture will focus on particularly fascinating runic items from all over the world.

Presented by Henrik Williams, a specialist in Old Norse languages and a professor of Scandinavian languages at Sweden’s Uppsala University. As a philologist, he studies languages in written historical sources, essentially combining literary criticism, history and linguistics. A 40-year Minnesota Vikings football fan since his year here as an exchange student, in 2016 Williams advised the team on the authenticity and meaning of its symbols in order to debunk disinformation on Nordic myths and Viking symbols.
