As Christmas nears in Sweden, its approach is heralded in early December with a nation-wide celebration of St. Lucia's Day. It is a joyous candlelight cremony celebrating Scandinavian culture and signals the beginning of the Swedish Christmas season.

For more that 20 years, the RI Swedish Heritage Association has reenacted this traditional Swedish event. Lucia and her attendants have live candles and sing 5 songs in Swedish. The selected Lucia is awarded a scholarship of $1000.00.
