Director of Collections, Exhibitions & Programs, Leslie Anderson will investigate L. A. Ring’s The Painter in the Village (1897). Unlike earlier depictions of Danish artists ensconced in cozy studios or venturing outside on pleasant sketching excursions, Ring shows a landscape painter working en plein air (French for “in the open air”) in winter’s inhospitable conditions. This lecture will explain why and how Ring expressed a personal artistic ideology through this painting.
