Sarah Sjöström takes Olympic gold at the 2016 Games in Rio on August 7.
Super Sarah Sjöström is the first Swedish woman to ever win a gold medal in swimming. And not only did she win, but she broke a world record. Sjöström, 22, broke the world record in the 100-meter butterfly, crushing it with a time of 55.48.
After the race, Sjostrom burst into tears. “It is unbelievable! I worked so damn hard for this,” she said, recalling her disappointing 4th place finish at the London Olympics when she had tonsillitis.
This is her third Olympic Games.
