Wedding bells at IKEA

Love at its simplest? Maybe. Just bear in mind — for your marriage to be legally binding some people need to be in the same room.

The Swedish retail giant isn’t just furnishing a new couple’s first apartment or even catering their wedding reception, they are now hosting the nuptials.
“We want to inspire people with new ways to marry,” says Anna Pilkrona Godden, press officer of IKEA Sweden. Finding a unique venue for a wedding isn’t a new concept (couples have been known to get married in the IKEA department they met in), but it’s an official thing now. People who want to celebrate their love are applying to have their weddings at IKEAs around the world, says Godden. This new type of wedding is neither expensive nor complicated and can be celebrated with any number of guests via a video link. With an officiant and two witnesses present, the wedding couple — who can choose from one of IKEA’s wedding themes (high society, classic, offbeat, fairy tale, beach) — gets everything filmed with a webcam. Guests, who may be at IKEAs in other locations around the world, can follow the wedding in real time via video link.

IKEA reminds you of one little technicality — if you want your marriage to be legally binding, the bridal couple, the marriage officiator and two witnesses need to be in the same room during the actual ceremony.
