Dan Berglund's TONBRUKET at Yoshi's Jazz Club: In the aftermath of Esbjrn Svenssons untimely passing in the summer of 2008 his former band-mates Dan Berglund and Magnus strm had to re-orientate and find a new meaning for their musical lives, as e.s.t. the band they had together, and that had become a world sensation during the early years of the new millennium, and was heralded as Trio of the Decade by no lesser than the London Times had ceased to exist.
Dan Berglund remembered his former colleagues from the Per Texas Johansson band, who he had performed with before he had met Esbjrn Svensson, and he hooked up with Johan Lindstrm, one of Swedens leading steel guitar players. Soon after they started with the first jams in a rehearsal room.
Over the course of the next six months Martin Hederos, pianist of pop-outfit Soundtracks of our Lives, and Andreas Werliin (drums) joined the jams and step by step the four individuals formed a real band that began to develop its own repertoire and style.
Tonbruket, the name they gave themselves, and that is also the title of their debut album (ACT), is the Swedish expression for a workshop or factory that produces tones. We really liked the sound of it and then, our tiny four-men factory also researches and produces. We produce tones that together hopefully result in good music.
Already during his membership in e.s.t. Dan Berglund was the rocknroller of the trio, citing Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Ritchie Blackmore amoung his biggest musical influences. Later he then started adding bands like Radiohead, Royksopp or Wilco to his favourites list.
Tonbruket is clearly inspired by those later ones. It also throws a new light on Dans importance within e.s.t. as a stylist and also soloist, bringing his strong artistry to the table, and shaping the sound of e.s.t. to something beyond that of a simple jazz-trio. Now with his new band he takes this approach further and opens it up to alternative and acoustic rock influences, and for the first time he also appears as a composer of catchy and intricate songs and melodies.
