Three seasons at once

Summer, winter and fall in Sweden – all at the same time? Is that possible?

Image

Well, it is what’s going on in Sweden right now if we are to believe Alexandra Ohlsson, meteorologist at SMHI (the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute).

And it’s been going on since October 5, when Tarfala in the Kebnekaise mountains was first to change seasons to winter. Now winter has also reached Stekenjokk in the Vilhelmina municipality, close to the Norwegian border. In the major parts of Sweden it is still fall at this time, but in Falsterbo (in the southern part of Skåne or Scania) and all along the west coast it is still summer, a summer on the way out but still.

“We have a somewhat cooler air all over the country,” says Ohlsson, “and that might mean that we only have three seasons until next week.” What about winter all over Sweden? That could take time. “It can take until the end of January next year until Skåne’s southern coast gets winter.”
